The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team is pleased to announce nine more offensive players to their 2016 class.
A 5-foot-11, 280 pound offensive lineman from Courtice, Ont., Matt Loenhart has been accepted into U of T’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). The most valuable player of the Holy Trinity C.S.S. Titans, Loenhart joins the Blues from the Oshawa Hawkeyes of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
Joining Loenhart on the O-Line will be Darius Daley. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound native of Ajax, Ont., started on the Durham Dolphins offensive line this season. He will begin his studies in psychology at U of T Scarborough Campus (UTSC) this fall.
A two-time Varsity football offensive MVP at Thistletown C.I., quarterback Bryan Smith stands at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. He won the Carol Roslin award for athletic and academic excellence and will join Loenhart in his studies in kinesiology in September.
A duo of receivers in Braedan Vavassori and Patrick O’Brien join U of T in the fall. Vavassori is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver who also played with the Hawkeyes in the OVFL, where he won the Mr. Hawkeye award twice and played in the 2013 junior varsity OVFL all-star game. He will begin his studies in social science at New College this September.
O’Brien of Oakville, Ont., stands at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds and joins the Blues from St. Thomas Aquinas. He has accepted his offer of admission to study environmental geography this fall.
Similarly, running backs Jaiden Hyland and Brennan Moss have committed to U of T this season. Hyland is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound product of Northern S.S. This past summer he led the Toronto Junior Argos in touchdowns during their 7-1 season. Moss is a 5-foot-9, 195-pound running back from Meadowvale S.S., who ranked sixth in rushing this season with the Mississauga Warriors in the OVFL. Hyland and Moss will both be studying humanties at UTSC and University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), respectively.
A 6-foot-2, 230-pound full back from Maple, Ont., Adamo Sciarra was named the football and rugby most valuable player as a member of the King City S.S. Lions. Shareef Johnson is a 6-foot-0, 225-pound slotback from Toronto and also played for Northern S.S. The duo will study psychology and social science, respectively, at UTSC.
The Varsity Blues open their 155th year of football at Guelph on Sunday, August 28. After a pit stop in Hamilton on Labour Day Monday, the Blues return to Varsity Stadium when they host the Carleton Ravens in their 2016 home opener.
