Montréal, October 21st, 2013 – Bishop’s receiver Alexander Fox, linebacker Mathieu Masseau of the Laval Rouge et Or and kicker Boris Bede of the Laval Rouge et Or are the RSEQ university football players of the week for the period ending October 20th, 2013.

Alexander Fox (Sports Studies), Bishop’s Gaiters’ receiver, is the offensive player of the week in the RSEQ. The 4th year player caught 7 passes for 162 yards and added 2 touchdowns in a  44-36 win against the Concordia Stingers. After setting the school mark for career receiving yards and touchdowns earlier this year, Fox set the single season record for receiving touchdowns (8) with his two on Saturday. The Montreal native is also just one shy of the RSEQ all-time record for career receiving touchdowns, he has 21.

Mathieu Masseau (Business), linebacker with the Rouge et Or from Université Laval, is the defensive football player of the week in the RSEQ. In the 33-3 win against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or, the Rouge et Or defense limited the opponents to 145 yards of total offense. Masseau had a strong showing collecting 4 solo tackles, and 6 assists. 2 of his tackles were behind the line of scrimmage, one of which was a quarterback sack.

Boris Bede (Physical and Health Education), kicker of the Rouge et Or from Université Laval, wins the special teams player of the week award in the RSEQ after a solid overall performance in a 33-3 win against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. The Toulon (France) native excelled in all three phases of the kicking game. He kicked a 44 yards field goal in the third quarter, 8 of his punts were downed inside the opponents’ 20 yards line and he maintained a 70 yard average on kickoffs, including two rouges. As a result of Bede’s kicks, Sherbrooke had to give up six safeties on offense for a total of twelve points.

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 20, 2013. OFFENCE: Will Finch, Western University Mustangs, QuarterbackSophomore quarterback Will Finch made history in Western’s 50-10 victory over the York Lions, throwing for 547 yards (32 for 48) and three touchdowns. Finch’s 547 yards, the second highest single game total in OUA history, gave the Burlington native 3,047 on the year and established a new CIS single-season record for passing yards. He also set a new OUA single-season mark for completion percentage, connecting on 69.7 percent of his passes this season.

DEFENCE: Ettore Lattanzio, University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, Lineman

Ottawa’s Ettore Lattanzio recorded three sacks in the Gee-Gees’ 45-15 win over Windsor on Saturday. The Ottawa native was a thorn in the side of the Lancers’ backfield all day, consistently bringing down quarterback Austin Kennedy. Lattanzio’s three sacks accounted for 27 lost yards on the day. The 6-foot, 230-pound nose tackle finished the regular season with nine sacks, crowning him the OUA leader and CIS co-leader. Lattanzio leads the CIS with 74 lost yards due to sacks.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Lirim Hajrullahu, Western University Mustangs, Kicker

In his final regular season contest fifth-year kicker Lirim Hajrullahu scored 20 points (five field goals and five extra points), establishing himself as the CIS all-time scoring leader with 422 points. The senior didn’t stop with one record however, also setting a new OUA milestone for career field goals with 77 and tying Michael Ray’s 2003 single-season field goal record with 22 this season. Hajrullahu completed 22 of 26 field goals this season for a completion rate of 85 percent.

EDMONTON – Jordan Yantz of the Manitoba Bisons, along with Calgary Dinos Adam Ballingall and Michael Schmidt, have been selected Week 7 Canada West football Players of the Week after helping lead their respective teams to victory.

In a crucial road game, the Manitoba Bisons Football team (4-3) went into #7 Saskatchewan Huskies and defeated them at Saskatoon for the first time since the 2006 season with a 33-26 win on Friday. With the win, Manitoba clinched a playoff spot and now has a chance to host a playoff game.

The fourth-year Bisons QB Jordan Yantz went 18-32 for a 364 passing yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT and also added 50 rushing yards on seven carries.

The four touchdowns matches his career high so far with the Bisons and he generated two TD drives in the fourth quarter when the Bisons were behind to lead the team to the win and capped with a 28 yard pass to Alex Vitt for the winning score with 5:50 left in the contest. Yantz threw touchdown passes (21, 27, 28 and 41 yards) to four different receivers.

The Regina native is second in Canada West with 2,104 passing yards (only 24 yards away from setting new Bison all-time high) from 128-230 and first in conference with 20 touchdowns thrown (new Bison all-time high) in seven conference regular season games.

In week eight, Manitoba finishes the conference regular season on the road at the Alberta Golden Bears (0-7) on Saturday, October 26 with 6 p.m. CT kickoff.

University of Calgary defensive back Adam Ballingall returned to his offensive roots Friday night as the Dinos defeated the Regina Rams 46-27.

In addition to picking up two solo and two assisted tackles on the night, the Kamloops, B.C. native helped break the game open in the fourth quarter and get one of his teammates a conference record. After Mercer Timmis scored his 17th touchdown of the season to make the score 38-21 Calgary, the Rams started driving downfield. Balingall, a converted receiver, picked off a Cayman Shutter pass on his own 29-yard line and returned it 63 yards to the Regina 18. On the very next play, Timmis rumbled the rest of the way to the end zone to become the Dinos’ and the conference’s new single-season touchdown leader with his 18th of the year.

Ballingall, a third-year student in the Schulich School of Engineering, and the Dinos look to wrap up an undefeated season when they host the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

You never know when you’re going to make an impact on a football game.

With the Regina Rams having just scored to make Friday night’s game a two-point affair in the second quarter, Calgary Dinos defensive back Michael Schmidt stepped on the field for the ensuing kickoff and drove a stake into any confidence and momentum the Rams had going.

Schmidt caught the Rams’ onside attempt on the fly and ran straight to the end zone, without so much as a Regina fingernail touching him along the way. The touchdown, Calgary’s first non-offensive major of the season, re-established a 9-point lead for the Dinos and they never looked back, taking a 46-27 win over the Rams to improve their record to 7-0 on the season.

A Haskayne School of Business student, Schmidt has started all seven games at cornerback for the Dinos and has recorded 29 tackles on the season. He and his teammates will go for the school’s first-ever undefeated record on the field Friday night as they wrap up the regular season with a tilt against the UBC Thunderbirds at McMahon Stadium, with kickoff at 6 p.m. MT.

Running back Thomas Troop of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Football Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20, 2013.

Troop, a 6-foot-0 arts student in his second year of eligibility from Alliston, Ont., compiled 168 net yards in rushing on 30 carries to add to the Axemen’s 452 net offensive yards in their 27-11 victory over the StFX X-Men on Saturday afternoon at Acadia.

He also scored the first of two Acadia touchdowns late in the third quarter on a four-yard rush and was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Troop, the 2012 AUS rookie of the year, is currently second in the conference in rushing yards with 456 yards on 92 carries.

Defensive lineman Jacob LeBlanc of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Football Defensive Player of the Week.

A third-year commerce student from Halifax, N.S., LeBlanc had two sacks in the Mounties’ 27-24 win Friday night over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

He also had 10.5 tackles – nine solo and three assisted – in what was the first Mount Allison victory at Huskies Stadium since 1997.

LeBlanc was the 2011 AUS rookie of the year and a second-team CIS all-Canadian in 2012.

Kicker and punter Ryan Begin of the Acadia University Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

Begin, a third-year business student from Orleans, Ont., scored 11 points in Acadia’s 27-11 win Saturday over the StFX X-Men. This included connecting on three of four field goal attempts from the 13, 40 and 29-yard lines, respectively. His longest field goal of 40 yards is the longest in the conference this season.

He also had 11 punts for 379 yards in the game, the longest for 47 yards, and was good on both PAT attempts. Three of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Begin is currently second in field goals made this season. He is 10-for-12 on attempts.
