Jordan Heather (History), Bishop’s Gaiters’ quarterback, is the offensive player of the week in the RSEQ after breaking the CIS all-time record for most passing yards in a season. The 5th year player from Oromocto, entered his final regular season contest needing 400 yards to set the record. Heather shattered it with an impressive 484 yards on the day in the Gaiters win over the McGill Redmen on Saturday, completing the season with 3132 passing yards. Heather also threw 4 touchdowns. With his four majors, he also set the RSEQ mark for most touchdown passes in a season with 20, two more than the previous record holder. With the win, Bishop’s finished the regular season in second place and will host its first playoff game in 19 years.

Shayne Gauthier (Intervention sportive) linebacker of the Laval Rouge et Or wins the defensive player of the week award in the RSEQ. In the 30-11 win against the sixth ranked Montreal Carabins, Gauthier had a strong showing leading both teams in tackles with a total of 7, 6 of them solo. Gauthier also added a quarterback sack. With the win, the Rouge et Or completed the regular season undefeated. The defensive unit was instrumental in that perfect season, leading the nation with an average of 11.5 points allowed per game.

Mathieu Paquette

Mathieu Paquette (Political science) kicker with the Bishop’s Gaiters wins the special teams player of the week award in the RSEQ. Paquette was perfect on four field goals helping the Gaiters win their last regular season game 40-21 against the McGill Redmen. On a cold, wet day in Lennoxville, Paquette made field goals of 20, 22, 28 and 29 yards and averaged 33.4 yards on 7 punts.

Canada West:

Henry-Kotania-Coombs

EDMONTON – In the final week of conference season football action, Anthony Coombs (Manitoba), Brad Kotania (Saskatchewan) and Tylor Henry (Alberta) stood out above all others to claim Player of the Week honours.

OFFENCE: #1 Anthony Coombs, Manitoba

Manitoba running back/kick returner Anthony Coombs had a record breaking game as the #9 Bisons clinched second place in the final regular season game with a 60-18 win at Alberta on Saturday.

Coombs was spectacular, rushing for 175 yards on only 13 carries (13.5 avg.) along with a Canada West record 107 TD run plus added another 122 receiving yards on five catches (24.4 avg.) with 1 TD in only 2.5 half quarters. The third-year running back/kick returner had 297 all-purpose yards in the road victory that propelled Manitoba to a 5-3 record and host a playoff game for the first time ever at Investors Group Field.

Coombs salted the game late in the second quarter when Manitoba was pinned deep in their territory and broke off a 107 rushing TD that set the new conference record for longest rush and third longest in CIS history. The Winnipeg native added a 38-yard TD reception in the first quarter and did not play the last quarter and half to rest for playoffs.

For 2013, Coombs was first in Canada West all-purpose yards with 1,696 yards, second with 1,015 rushing yards, third in punt return average (11.6), ninth in receiving yards with 509 and second in overall touchdowns, with 11.

Manitoba now hosts its first playoff game since 2007, against the #10 Saskatchewan Huskies (5-3) on Friday, Nov. 1, 7:00 p.m. CT at Investors Group Field. The game is live on Shaw TV and canadawest.tv.

DEFENCE: #40 Brad Kotania, Saskatchewan

First-year University of Saskatchewan linebacker Brad Kotania forced a fumble and recorded a sack while tallying seven total tackles in a 33-15 Saskatchewan win over the Regina Rams.

The Arts & Science student from Calgary, AB led the green and white in tackles on Saturday with a personal best of seven. Kotania’s sack and forced fumble gave the Huskies the ball in Regina territory early in the third after they had extended the lead to 19-7.

After defeating their provincial rivals for the second time this season to close out conference play, the # 10 Huskies will battle the No. 9 Manitoba Bisons Friday night in Winnipeg in a Canada West Semifinal.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #1 Tylor Henry, Alberta

First-year Alberta Golden Bears receiver Tylor Henry accumulated a staggering 341 all-purpose yards during Alberta’s season ending loss to the Manitoba Bisons. The Camrose, Alberta product hauled in a game high 11 passes for a game high 149 yards, and he returned five punts and two kick-offs for a total of 192 yards and one touchdown. In fact, his 106-yard kick-off return TD is the longest in U of A history, and only five yards shy of breaking the Canada West record.

Henry finished his debut CIS season first in Canada West receptions (59), first in receiving yards (688), fourth in receiving yards per game (86), second in punt return yard average (12), first in kickoff return yard average (26.6) and second in conference all-purpose yards (1,493). Saturday’s TD was his fifth of the season, a total that also includes a punt return TD and three receiving TDs.

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 27, 2013.

OFFENCE: Wayne Moore, McMaster Marauders, Running Back 

Second-year running back Wayne Moore (Etobicoke, Ont.) was a force for the Marauders, powering for 140 yards on 22 carries in McMaster’s 41-7 quarter-final win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Moore set the tone early for the Marauder offence, as he carried the ball six times for 50 yards on the opening drive of the game helping his team march down the field and score a major to take an early 7-0 lead. His longest run of the game was a third quarter scamper for 24 yards giving McMaster excellent field position and allowing Tyler Crapigna to kick a field goal extending the lead to 27-7.

DEFENCE: Curtis Newton, Guelph Gryphons, Linebacker

Curtis Newton, a second-year linebacker from London, Ont., was a defensive force for the Gryphons in their 31-21 quarter-final win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday night. The 6’2, 215 lbs. linebacker had five solo tackles, one assisted tackle and a crucial interception in the playoff victory. Newton, an Arts major, picked off quarterback Austin Kennedy, tallying a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown, which increased the Gryphons lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Daniel Ferraro, Guelph Gryphons, Kicker

Daniel Ferraro, a third-year from Mississauga, Ont., was instrumental in winning the battle of field position in Guelph’s 31-21 quarter-final win over the Windsor Lancers. Ferraro was successful on each of his two field goal attempts, splitting the uprights from 19 and 22 yards out. He averaged 37.8 yards per punt on nine punts and was a difference maker by keeping the Lancers pinned deep in their own territory, forcing them to give up two safeties.

Running back Jordan Botel of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Football Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 27, 2013.

Botel, a 5-foot-10 arts student is his second year of eligibility from Prince George, B.C., compiled 113 net yards in rushing on 28 carries in Saturday’s 23-14 win over the defending AUS champion Acadia Axemen.

With the victory, the Mounties clinch second place in the conference standings and the hosting rights to the AUS championship semifinal game this Saturday against the third-place Axemen.

Botel led the conference in rushing this season with 758 total yards on 170 carries.

Defensive back Devante Sampson of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Football Defensive Player of the Week.

A first-year arts student from Mississauga, Ont., Sampson had 7.5 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for a loss, in Saturday’s 23-14 Mount Allison victory over Acadia.

He also had one interception for 18 yards in the win. Sampson finished tied for first in the AUS in interceptions this season with four.

Kicker and punter Kyle McLean of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

 

McLean, a third-year geography student from Nepean, Ont., had 10 punts for 323 yards in the Mounties’ 23-14 win over Acadia on Saturday.

 

McLean also had six kickoffs for 245 yards in the matchup, was good on three of three extra-point kicks and added a rouge in the victory.
