T-Birds’ Barnett, van Gylswyk, and Dinos’ Timmis earn awards after Hardy Cup Semifinal wins

Thanks to their starring roles in a pair of Hardy Cup Semifinal wins over the weekend, UBC’s Mitch Barnett and Quinn van Gylswyk, along with Calgary Dino Mercer Timmis are the Canada West football players of the week.

Barnett, a fourth-year linebacker from North Vancouver, BC, is the Defensive Player of the Week following UBC’s 52-10 victory over the defending Hardy Cup champion Manitoba Bisons. The veteran defender recorded a pair of interceptions, including a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown in the victory, which was televised national on Global Television.

The Special Teams Player of the Week is van Gylswyk, who booted five field goals and had a booming punt average of 49.2 yards in UBC’s first home playoff game in four years.

Rounding out this week’s winners is Calgary running back Mercer Timmis. The dynamic back, who along with van Gylswyk was named a Canada West all-star last week, led the Dinos to a 37-29 comeback win over the Saskatchewan Huskies. Timmis rushed for a game-high 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns to keep Calgary’s undefeated season alive.

UBC’s Barnett and van Gylswyk meet Timmis’ Dinos this Saturday in the 79th Hardy Cup, which will be televised nationally on Global. Kick off for the contest is slated for 12 PM MT (1 PM CT) live from McMahon Stadium.

OFFENCE – Mercer Timmis

Calgary Dinos

Running back

6-1, 4th-year

Burlington, ON

Down 16-8 at the half, the Calgary Dinos didn’t crack when their first taste of adversity all season long came calling.

Leading Calgary’s eventual 37-29 comeback win was veteran running back Mercer Timmis, who posted 154 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on 21 rushes.

After putting Calgary on the board in the second quarter with a short five-yard scamper to the end zone, Timmis’ biggest play of the game came with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Burlington, ON product ran 24 yards to pay dirt, giving Calgary a 26-22 lead – the Dinos’ first of the afternoon.

Calgary wouldn’t look back, as Calgary managed the final 10 minutes to earn the victory and keep their Hardy and Vanier Cup hopes alive.

DEFENCE – Mitch Barnett

UBC Thunderbirds

Linebacker

6-1, 4th-year

North Vancouver, BC

On a day where the UBC defence shut down the Bisons attack at every turn, Mitch Barnett’s pair of interceptions stood out, kicking off and capping off a dominant 52-10 win.

Barnett’s first pick of the day came on Manitoba’s second drive of the afternoon, as the linebacker read quarterback Theo Deezar perfectly and made a great play on the ball, snagging it at the Bisons 37-yard line before getting hauled down at the 35. The pick set up great field position for the UBC offence, who capitalized to put the ‘Birds up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Barnett’s second pick came when the game was essentially won, but it demonstrated the linebacker’s remarkable athleticism and playmaking ability. Deezar, with his team down 39-2, attempted to push the ball downfield with a deep shot over the middle. Barnett made a spectacular one-handed grab at midfield, bringing the ball down against his helmet for a David Tyree-esque pick. Barnett then flashed his great speed, as he blew by a stunned Manitoba offense for the 55-yard pick-six that cemented once and for all the UBC win.

SPECIAL TEAMS – Quin van Gylswyk

UBC Thunderbirds

Kicker

6-4, 3rd-year

Victoria, B.C.

Amidst a torrential downpour in Vancouver on Saturday, T-Birds kicker Quin van Gylswyk khad a phenomenal day, drilling five of six field goal attempts, as well as all five of his extra point conversions. In all, van Gylswyk scored 20 points for the ‘Birds, as they dominated Manitoba to the tune of a 52-10 final.

Van Gylswyk’s most impressive boot of the day was his 42-yarder with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. After a 33-yard run from tailback Brandon Deschamps set up the chance, van Gylswyk made no mistake from distance, drilling the kick through the uprights.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
