Running back Quinn LeBlanc of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 27, 2015.

A second-year commerce student from Calgary, Alta., LeBlanc had six receptions for 89 total yards and a touchdown in Mount Allison’s 31-7 loss to the Sherbrooke Vert et OrSaturday in Sackville, N.B.

His stats also included 18 rushing yards on four carries for the Mounties.

Linebacker Brad Herbst of the Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.

A second-year criminology student from Ottawa, Ont., Herbst posted 7.5 tackles (six solo and three assisted) in the Huskies 23-17 loss to the Bishop’s Gaiters Saturday in Halifax, N.S.

Herbst had a sack for a loss of 12 yards in the matchup and also posted a pass breakup.

Kicker and punter Ideen Samadi of the Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.

A first-year arts student from Edmonton, Alta., Samadi had 12 punts for 372 yards (31.0 average) in Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Bishop’s as well as five kickoffs for 248 yards (49.6 average).

The freshman made good on his lone field goal attempt for 23 yards and was also successful on both extra-point kicks for five total points in the matchup.

Highlights:

Christopher Amoah had the best performance of his university career so far on Saturday. The running back was the catalyst of the Rouge et Or’s whitewash victory over the St. Francis University X-men, with a score of 64-0.

In 15 runs, three of which led to a touchdown, the Sports Intervention student-athlete gain a total of 181 yards.

Highlights:

Defensive lineman Mathieu Breton had his best game in the Gaiters’ purple and white, leading his team to their first victory of the RSEQ university football season. The second-year Business major recorded 3 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles. Two of them came for losses of yards and included a sack.

Number 99 contributed to the success of his team’s defensive line. After a slow start, with the Gaiters lagging behind by 14 points in the first minutes of the game, the Gaiters’ defense stopped the Huskies on their tracks, and they only managed to get in 3 other points in the remainder of the game.

Highlights:

Punter Félix Ménard-Brière accomplished a rare feat last Saturday. In the fourth quarter, the Carabins student-athlete punted the ball and then ran to the Stingers’ 2-yard line to recover it himself, which led to a touchdown in the next play.

In addition to being responsible for the key play in the game, Ménard-Brière averaged 59.3 yards in six kickoffs and 43 yards in seven punts.

OUA:

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 28, 2015.

OFFENCE: James Roberts (Cambridge, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Guelph

Guelph’s quarterback James Roberts (Cambridge, Ont.) had his way with the Ottawa defence this week, throwing 25 completions on 35 attempts for 391 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-26 victory.

The second-year Arts student-athlete also snuck into the endzone on a five yard rushing TD to account for his fifth touchdown of the day.

It was a personal best for the 6’0″, 185 lbs quarterback, who set career highs in completions, passing yards, touchdown passes, and completion percentage (71.4%) en route to a 48-26 win over the Gee-Gees.

Roberts and the Gryphons will look to improve to 6-0 as they travel to Kingston, Ont. this weekend to take on the Queen’s Gaels.  Kick-off is set for 1pm, live on OUA.tv.

DEFENCE: Jacob Heathcote (Aldergrove, B.C.) – 2nd yr. – McMaster

McMaster’s Jake Heathcote (Aldergrove, B.C.) takes home OUA Defensive Player of the Week honours for Week 5 after a stellar performance against the York Lions during the Marauders 67-10 Homecoming win.

The 6’4″ 230 lbs linebacker led all tacklers for the Marauders with 6 solo tackles and two assisted tackles, while pulling in two interceptions, one which he returned for a 27-yard touchdown to give Mac a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

The second-year Commerce student-athlete leads all McMaster defenders with 18 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, this season.

McMaster heads down to Windsor, Ont. this Saturday, looking to improve to 4-1 as they take on the Lancers. The action gets started at 1pm, live on OUA.tv.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Nathan Mesher (Waterloo, Ont.) – 1st yr. – Laurier

Laurier kicker Nathan Mesher (Waterloo, Ont.) was responsible for 12 of the Golden Hawk’s 18 points Saturday, on his way to OUA Special Teams Player of the Week honours.

The first-year Business student-athlete connected on a field goal from 47 yards out, the second longest boot in OUA this season. Mesher is now 9 for 10 this season, which ties him for the second best kicking percentage in the league.  He finished the afternoon a perfect 4-for-4.

The 6’0″ 165 lbs kicker also improved his punting game in the 22-18 loss to Windsor, averaging 41.1 yards per punt, eight yards better than his average entering the game.

Laurier will now travel across town to take on the rival Waterloo Warriors in the “Battle of Waterloo” Saturdayafternoon at 1:00pm.

Football Players of the Week: Buckley repeats at offence, Lyles earns another award­

For the second consecutive week, Calgary Dinos quarterback Andrew Buckley is the Canada West offensive player of the week.

Buckley, who led the Dinos to a Canada West record 80-point performance two weekends ago against Alberta, posted another remarkable outing on Saturday. The fifth-year veteran led the No. 1-ranked Dinos to a 72-8 win over the Regina Rams.

Calgary’s 72-point effort is the fifth most in Canada West history.

Also earning a conference honour this week is Manitoba Bisons running back/returner Jamel Lyles, who earns his second special teams player of the week award this season after sparking the Bisons’ 42-32 come-from-behind win over Alberta with a 73-yard punt return touchdown on the final play of the third quarter.

Lyles has now won a player of the week award in three of his first four weeks, as he was also the offensive player of the week to open the season.

Rounding out this week’s winners is Saskatchewan linebacker Justin Filteau, who is the defensive player of the week after helping the Huskies earn their second consecutive victory.

Filteau racked up 13.5 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception return for a touchdown in Saskatchewan’s 45-29 win over UBC.

OFFENCE – Andrew Buckley, Calgary Dinos, Quarterback

6-0, 201, 5th-year, Calgary, AB

Andrew Buckley was at it again on the weekend, leading the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos to another lopsided victory – this time 72-8 over the Regina Rams.

Playing three quarters, the fifth-year pivot completed 21 of 29 passes for 478 yards and four touchdowns as the Dinos’ air attack took hold at Mosaic Stadium. It was the fifth-best single game passing performance in school history and just 24 yards off his career high of 512 yards.

Now second in the nation in passing yards per game, Buckley will look to keep the Dinos’ undefeated streak intact when they host the Saskatchewan HuskiesSaturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

DEFENCE – Justin Filteau, Saskatchewan Huskies, Linebacker

5-8, 200, 1st-year, Moose Jaw, SK

First-year University of Saskatchewan linebacker Justin Filteau led the Huskie defensive effort in a 45-29 win over the No. 6 UBC Thunderbirds on the road.

The Moose Jaw, SK native led both sides with an impressive 13.5 tackles. Filteau’s highlight reel play came in late in the first quarter with the Huskies already out to a 14-0 lead. Filteau closed in and snagged the ball away from a T-Bird receiver. The 5-8 linebacker returned the pass 48 yards to the end zone, giving the Huskies momentum and a 21-0 lead they would not relinquish.

SPECIAL TEAMS – Jamel Lyles, Manitoba Bisons, Returner

6-0, 205, 1st-year, Surrey, BC

Manitoba Bisons kick returner and running back Jamel Lyles continues to impress on special teams. The multi-faceted player was a major contributor in the No. 8 Bisons’ 42-32 road victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday.

The first-year kick return specialist changed the momentum to the visitor’s side when he returned a punt for a 73-yard TD at the end of the third quarter and tied the score at 32. The play was the catalyst for the come-from-behind win by Manitoba, as they added 10 more points in the fourth quarter, including a 33-yard TD run by Lyles.

Overall, Lyles finished the contest with 104 punt return yards on four returns for a 26.0 average and added two kickoff returns for 35 yards. The Surrey, BC native also recorded a game-high 119 rushing yards and one rushing TD.

After four weeks, Lyles is first in conference punt return yards at 235, fourth in Canada West kickoff return yards with 276 yards and first in all-purpose yards with 1,021.

Next up for Manitoba (2-2) is the annual homecoming game on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. CT against the Regina Rams (0-4) at Investors Group Field.
