Quarterback Nick Bynkoski of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Oct. 11, 2015.
A second-year kinetics student from Duncan, B.C., Bynkoski threw 19 completions on 23 attempts for 262 yards and four touchdowns in Friday night’s 47-9 Acadia victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax.
He also ran for 51 yards on eight carries, including an eight-yard rushing touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week
Name: Christian Plante
University: Mount Allison University
Position: Defensive lineman
Hometown: Dartmouth, N.S.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BCM
Height and weight: 6’2”, 295lbs
Defensive lineman Christian Plante of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.
A fifth-year commerce student from Dartmouth, N.S., Plante had 6.5 tackles (six solo and one assisted) in Mount Allison’s 27-17 defeat of the StFX X-Men Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.
Among these were 3.5 tackles for a loss of 15 total yards, including 1.5 sacks for a loss of 11 yards. Plante was also credited with putting the Mounties on the board, recovering a fumble in the StFX end zone in the second quarter.
Plante’s stats also included two carries for nine total yards on offence.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Name: Suleiman Semalulu
University: Acadia University
Position: Defensive back
Hometown: Gatineau, Que.
Year of eligibility: Fourth
Academic program: BA
Height and weight: 5’9”, 185lbs
Defensive back Suleiman Semalulu of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.
A fourth-year arts student from Gatineau, Que., Semalulu recovered a punt blocked by teammate Spencer da Costa and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown in the Axemen’s 47-9 defeat of Saint Mary’s Friday evening.
Semalulu also posted a solo tackle on defence.

MORELLI, BIEWALD, HAMLIN NAMED OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 13th, 2015.
OFFENCE: Eric Morelli (Burlington, Ont) – 2nd yr. – Laurier
Eric Morelli had his way with the Gee-Gees defence on Friday night, as the second-year quarterback threw the ball with relative ease as the Golden Hawks downed Ottawa 65-30.
The second-year business student-athlete tied the Laurier single-game record with six touchdowns on the day, finding three different receivers for scores in the game. Morelli now accompanies legendary Golden Hawk Bill Kubas as the only other Laurier quarterback to throw that many touchdowns in a game.
The 5’11’’ 195 lbs gunslinger led the Golden Hawks in their most offensively productive game in four years, all while battling for the final playoff spot in OUA.
Morelli and the Golden Hawks will host the defending Yates Cup champion, McMaster Marauders, on Saturdayat 1:00pm.
DEFENCE: John Biewald (Ottawa, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Western
Defensive end John Biewald led the Western Mustangs in another stellar defensive performance as the Mustangs trampled the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 58-2 last week.
The 6’4’’ 225 lbs playmaker collected five solo tackles and a sack for a loss of 10 yards. Biewald was all over the field as he also had a tackle for a loss of 10 yards, a forced fumble which he recovered and returned 38 yards, and a blocked pass.
The fourth-year social science student-athlete has been extremely productive for the Mustangs all season, as he sits half a sack behind teammate Ricky Osei-Kusi for the top spot in the category.
Biewald has helped lead the Mustangs defence to top spot in OUA, allowing only 11 points per game, while picking off 13 passes and adding four touchdowns of their own.
Biewald and the Mustangs return home to London, Ont. where they will welcome the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees to the not-so-friendly confines of TD Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Nate Hamlin (Ottawa, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Carleton
Defensive back Nate Hamlin added an exclamation mark on a big 52-0 Ravens win over the visiting York Lionson Friday night.
The third-year communications student-athlete returned a York missed field goal 129 yards, tying an OUA and CIS record, on his way to the end zone to finish the Ravens scoring effort in style.
The 6’1″ DB also led the Raven’s defence with six solo and one assisted tackle on the night, filling in at linebacker for the injured Leon Cenerini.
With the win, the Ravens also clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 1996.
The Ravens bye week couldn’t come at a better time as they will host the Guelph Gryphons to close out the season next Saturday, October 24, at MNP Park.
