CJFL: Historic rivalry highlights opening of BCFC playoffs

The six-time defending BCFC champion Vancouver Island Raiders need just one victory to return to the this year’s title game and a chance to make it seven straight years as league champion and they can book their trip this Saturday when they host a historic rival in the Okanagan Sun at Caledonia Park.

Kickoff is at 1 pm.
On paper a clash between the Raiders (9-0-1) and Sun (3-7) should be one-sided affair given how far these teams sit in the standings but once these teams hit the field – especially at Caledonia Park – it could be a much different story.
The Raiders and Sun have gone head-to-head three times this season and only one of those contests – a 44-28 win by the Raiders at the Apple Bowl back on September 15 – could be considered a one-sided affair.
The Raiders squeaked by the Sun by a 30-29 score in their first meeting of the season at Caledonia Park back on August 18 and, in their most recent meeting on September 29, the Raiders only managed a 32-30 win on home turf.
An intriguing wrinkle to this match-up is that the Sun will be debuting a new head coach in the contest after parting ways with Gavin Lake on Monday. Sun President Paul Carson will be behind the bench when his team tries to score the major upset over the heavily-favoured Raiders.
The other BCFC semi-final game this weekend sees the Langley Rams (7-2-1) host the Westshore Rebels (7-3) at McLeod Stadium also on Saturday.
Kickoff is at 4 pm.
The Rams earned the right to host the contest after pounding the Sun by a score of 48-6 score last week while the Rebels saw their bid to host a home playoff date squashed by the Raiders who knocked them off by a 57-7 score.
The Rams and Rebels met just once during the regular season back on September 29 at Bear Mountain Stadium and it was the Rams who emerged as clearly the better team that outing pounding the Rebels by a 41-7 score. For more information, please visit www.bcjuniorfootball.ca.
