CJFL: PFC week 8 in review (Colts remain undefeated)

PFC WEEK 8 IN REVIEW

CALGARY COLTS           42
EDMONTON HUSKIES        33                   SEPTEMBER 29 CLARKE PARK

The Huskies opened the scoring on a Jonathan Heidebrecht single, and then the Colts scored a pair of majors in a span of nearly 5 minutes as Jimmy Ralph collected touchdown tosses from Derek Cooper to make it a 14-1 game after 15 minutes.
A pair of Heidebrecht placements pulled the Huskies to within 7, and then the Colts ground game went to work as Chucks Okafor, who ran for 89 yards, found paydirt to give Calgary a 2-score lead. Heidebrecht tacked on his third field goal of the frame to make it 21-10. Then the teams traded touchdowns in the final 3 seconds of the quarter as Ben Hnatiuk made it a 28-10 Colts lead, but Zach Wilkie who caught 2 passes on the night made them both count as his first was a 17-yard grab to make it 28-17 at halftime.
After a Heidebrecht kickoff rouge made it a 10-point difference, Cooper would connect with Nik Petros for a 17-yard major, followed by DJ Whetton’s 76-yard dash to daylight to make it a 42-18 game after 3 quarters.
Edmonton put up a pair of late majors, including an Erdmann touchdown run and Wilkie’s 2nd score of the night. Edmonton drops to 0-7 and hosts Winnipeg next Sunday and the Colts welcome Saskatoon with the regular season title at stake.

SASKATOON HILLTOPS        28
EDMONTON WILDCATS       15                  SEPTEMBER 30 CLARKE PARK

The visitors got off to an early 10-0 lead as they took advantage of Wildcat errors. Zach Schmidt missed on a short field goal try, but the return was fumbled and the Hilltops would recover at the Edmonton 8. Saskatoon made them pay as Matt Karpinka connected with Brendon Gryba for a quick 7-point lead. Another muffed kick return led to a 42-yard Schmidt field goal over a minute later.
The Hilltops lead would expand to 17 as Tom Shockey barged in from a yard away almost two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. Schmidt was later wide on a 29-yard try as he struggled only hitting 2 of 5 tries on the game. The Wildcats would receive a huge boost as Tyler Henry took a Schmidt punt and took it all the way back for a 103-yard touchdown. The Toppers lead was 18-7 at the break.
Any hopes of a Wildcat comeback were put on ice when Andre Lalonde who ran for 202 yards on the day, finished off a drive where he did the bulk of the work, scored on a 3-yard run to salt away the win.
The Wildcats struggled offensively all afternoon as quarterback Jordan Olson sat out after being diagnosed with a broken wrist earlier in the week.  The combination of Taylor Yaremchuk and Jesse Schneider combined for only 107 yards passing. Schmidt would hit on a 10-yard field goal, while Ideen Samadi chipped in with 2 field goals to make it a 28-15 final.

The Hilltops square off with Calgary with 1st in the conference on the line. The Wildcats meet up with Regina .

REGINA THUNDER   31
WINNIPEG RIFLES     26                         SEPTEMBER 30 CANAD INNS STADIUM

Winnipeg scored on their opening drive as they took 6 plays, all on the ground to pound it into the end zone as Hovi scored on a 3-yard run only 2:19 into the game. The Rifles defense forced a pair of Regina two-and-outs but couldn’t take advantage of excellent field position as they started 2 straight possessions inside the Thunder 50.
The Thunder started their next drive at their 30 and starting pivot Kyle Siemens connected with Mitch Thompson on a 39-yard pass-and-run that had an unnecessary roughness penalty tacked onto it & Nick Brown scored the tying touchdown on a 26-yard dash to even the score at 7.
The Rifles began the sandwich stanza on the Thunder 1 following an Eric Plett 44-yard interception return on the last play of the first quarter. On the first play, Hovi scored his 2nd major to put the Gunners back in front 14-7.
Asher Hastings came in to quarterback the Thunder & he engineered a 7-play, 78-yard drive that wrapped with a Will Heward 29-yard touchdown grab that tied the game for the second time at 14.
The Rifle offense under starter John Kiesman, who would throw for 168 yards on the day moved the ball very well throughout the half, but interceptions would hurt as veteran Thunder defensive back Mark Ingram intercepted Kiesman in the end zone. But the Rifles regained the lead as conference-leading receiver Brett Carter made 2 great grabs on the drive, the first was a one-handed catch inside the Regina 20, followed by a “Look what I got, Ma?” touchdown grab as he somehow came up with the ball despite excellent coverage. The Gunners led 21-14 at halftime.
The Thunder tied the game on the opening drive of the second half as Heward collected his second major of the afternoon on a 24-yard reception from Siemens who returned to the game as Thunder Head Coach Erwin Klempner “platooned” his pivots.
The Rifles took their first drive of the half to the Regina 19 and Brad Mikoluff was good on a 26-yard field goal try to put Winnipeg up by 3. Koot tied the game again with 72 seconds left in the period and the quarter ended in a 24-24 tie.
Mitch Thompson, who caught 4 passes for 112 yards on the day, put Regina in front to stay nearly 3 minutes into the final quarter as Hastings connected with him on a 12-yard touchdown toss to make it 31-24 Thunder. Donovan Gregoire would pull Winnipeg to within 5 as he sacked Hastings in the end zone, but they could get no closer as the Thunder hung on for the victory.

The Rifles close out their season as they head to Edmonton to play the Huskies. The Thunder host the Wildcats to close out their regular season slate.
