With every football player comes a story of how they started, and Michael Brown is no different when it comes to how he got his start in the game he now loves. “Ever since I was 8 i’ve always had that passion to play football so it was my friend Matthew Gallo that helped me push my dad to pursue my dreams of actually playing tackle football for the first time.”
Before joining his high school team, Brown had been lucky enough to experience success at a competitive level. With the Roughriders (HMFA) he was named 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2007, Brown was named Offensive MVP. A year later, Brown showed his versatility as a football player by claiming the 2008 Defensive MVP.
Along with his awards won as a Roughrider, Brown had also been rewarded as a member of the Steelers winning most outstanding running back in 2009 and Offensive MVP a year later.
Entering high school was a different experience for Brown as he was put in a position that the young star was not familiar with. “Grade nine of my high school career playing for the St.Thomas Knights was a true struggle sitting on the bench, but I took that in a positive way and came back my grade ten year and played TE,RB,SS,KR & PR.”
Coming into a new season, older, more experienced, Brown still had not felt that he was in a position where he needed to be in order to succeed as a football player. “Still I have never found that edge that I wanted so I had a conversation with my dad and the motto for the start of my senior year was, ‘You Do What You Have To Do, So You Can Do What You Want To Do’ and that was whether I wanted to be a pro football player, where I would have to train my heart out, or if it was to become an honour student, where I would have to study as hard as I could.” Taking that advice from his father ,ay have been the thing to help put Brown on the right track. “So I took that quote and put it into action. I became a starter at both sides of the ball my Gr.11 year for RB & OLB while winning the Rookie of the Year Award at the end of our 2011 season.”
This past year, Brown and his teammates had unfortunately experienced an injury that would be a big blow, had Brown not stepped up and took his team and put them on his shoulders. “Our recent season was tough for our whole team knowing that one of our starting running backs got injured in our first game of our season. So seeing how I was the only RB left, I would have to take the great responsibility in helping my team in anyway I could, whether it was on offence or defense. At first I wasn’t sure if i could handle that responsibility but coach Claudio Silivestri took me a side and said that I was the only running back left, and this team needs you as the season goes on.”
Like any star player, Browns response was short but what any athlete would say. “Coach, I could do it, as long as we all have faith in the team. In our season I had an average of 3 touchdowns per game and around 200 yards to go along with it.”
With his time at St.Thomas More ending soon, Brown had racked up an impressive amount of awards and acclamations.
St. Thomas More Student Award: 2010-2011 Spirit Award
St. Thomas More 2010 Senior Rookie of the year
Steel City Bowl 2011 Most Outstanding RB
Football Accomplishment: 2011 – Scoring 5 touchdowns in the regular season. A St.Thomas More record
2010 – St. Thomas More winning the city championship
2010- Steelers winning the OMFL championship
As for what’s to come next for Michael Brown is anyones guess but the possibilities for this talented young athlete are endless. It is evident however that the versatile player has a overall plan of his own. “I plan to continue playing for football at the next level whether
attending Canadian or an American school. One of my goals is to play in any
professional football league. While attending school I plan to get a sociology degree. My future aspirations are to become either a pastor or a motivational speaker.”
Football or no football, Brown will have an affect on people, no matter where his path takes him.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
