Sherbrooke’s William Dion will get the first crack at rewriting the CIS record book when his No. 9-ranked Vert & Or host No. 4 Laval Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time (live on Radio-Canada).
Dion, a fifth-year kicker, goes into the duel with 70 career field goals, one shy of the national standard established in 2010 by Calgary’s Aaron Ifield (2006-10). In four outings this fall, the native of Drummondville, Que., has split the uprights seven times in 11 attempts.
Meanwhile in Calgary, Saskatchewan defensive back Bryce McCall will also look to make CIS history when his No. 10 Huskies visit the No. 2 Dinos Saturday at 5 p.m. MT (live on Shaw TV).
McCall, also in his fifth and final year of eligibility, enters tomorrow’s contest with 20 career interceptions, one behind the all-time mark set in 1974 by both Saskatchewan’s Bob Coffin (1970-74) and Queen’s Peter McNabb (1970-72 Toronto, 1973-74 Queen’s), and tied in 2008 by Western’s Matt Carapella (2004-08). So far this season, the Regina native has one interception in four games.
Other players to keep an eye on this weekend include:
– Receiving: Windsor’s Jordan Brescacin needs 116 receiving yards to become the 19th player in CIS history to reach the 2,500 plateau over his career. A week ago, Brescacin became the 25th CIS receiver with 150 career catches and now ranks 16th all-time with 158.
– Passing: UBC’s Billy Greene is only six yards away from becoming the 20th CIS quarterback to pass for 7,500 career yards. The 2011 Hec Crighton Trophy winner is also the CIS active leader in career passing attempts with 1,025 (12th all-time) and completions with 544 (15th all-time).
– Punt returns: Saint Mary’s Jahmeek Taylor needs 50 punt return yards to get to 2,000 for his career, a standard reached by only three CIS players over the years.
