Drawn by potential

Dashaun Smellie commitment

CEGEP receiver newest recruit to join RSEQ team’s 2014 class.

The opportunity to excel with a team that has been on a continual rise was too good of an offer for Dashaun Smellie to pass up.

As a result, the 6’3, 202 pound wide receiver from Mississauga, Ontario has signed with the Bishop’s Gaiters for the 2014 RSEQ season.

“I decided to attend Bishop’s for the next four years was because over the past two years living in Lennoxville playing for Champlain College, I got to see something great from that school,” explained Smellie of his decision.  “Seeing them excel from last year to this year, they made a big jump placing second in their division.”

“It made me think that this team has the potential into becoming something more in the near future, so I thought “why not be a part of it?”. They are a great coaching core there.  This year, they drafted four outstanding receivers to the CFL level; learning more with the right coaching can help me excel to greater opportunities in my career.”

Moreover, academics were a factor in the receiver’s decision.

“Educational wise, I could see myself excelling because it’s a small school so it allows me to connect more with my teachers and create a bond,” added Smellie.  “There’s not a lot of distraction in a small school compared to a big school so in making my decision, I had that in mind.”

Smellie recently completed his CEGEP career with Division 1 team, Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars.  This past season, he was limited to playing six games due to hamstring and shoulder injuries.  However, he amassed 314 receiving yards on 22 catches (average of 14.3 yards per catch).
