Saint Mary’s dismantled the Acadia Axemen in AUS exhibition action Saturday afternoon in Halifax at Huskie Stadium. Newcomer Melvin Abankwah, who starred for the Etobicoke Eagles in minor football, was the star of the game.
The Etobicoke native had two rushing touchdowns in the first half and a 75-yard punt return in the second half.
Abankwah will be competing for playing time with fifth-year seniors Devon Jones and Craig Leger. He will also complement conference MVP and Team Canada Senior member Jahmeek Taylor in the return game.
The Axemen starting defense held their own against the Huskie offense but the Axemen defense could not generate anything versus the Huskie defense led by first year defensive coordinator Devin Murphy.
Acadia recruit Ryan Begin gave the visitors their only points in the 2nd quarter. Truro’s Brett Lauther made consecutive field goals in the second quarter to make it 20-3 at the half.
Huskies started with QB Jack Creighton and also got freshmen Jesse Mills some action. Head coach Steve Sumarah was happy with all four of his QBs who played in the game.
Saint Mary’s rested several top players, including Taylor and Jones, defensive lineman Dan Schutte and defensive back Mark Holden.
The Huskies open the regular season at home on Friday night against Mount Allison. Acadia visits St. Francis Xavier on Saturday.
