The peewee Stampeders will have a rematch of the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) championship game which was a close game against the Niagara Generals 16-8 for Burlington. Peter Malon, the head coach is looking forward to a competitive game and has been preparing the players since last spring. Last year’s head coach Anthony Mandalfino has moved up an age group and will be head coach of the bantam squad.
The bantams were ousted in the semi-finals in 2010 and will be looking to avenge the loss. They will have to wait to face the Hamilton team with their own Labour Day classic on September 5.
The atom team were COMFL champions last year as well, in an electrifying come-from-behind victory against Scarborough. They are coached by Jordan Johnston this season.
Each game this season will have a theme. The season opener this Sunday is Braves Day, celebrating Burlington’s junior football team, the only club east of Hamilton until Ottawa. Braves players will be helping to collect food for the Salvation Army food bank, signing autographs and giving away tickets to their home opener Friday August 26 against Hamilton.
The games start at 9:30am with the atoms, peewees at 11:30 and bantams at 1:30pm. All home games are at Nelson Stadium.
The regular season schedule is as follows :
Aug 21 home vs Niagara
Aug 28 away vs Oshawa
Sept 5 home vs Hamilton
Sept 11 away vs Pickering
Sept 18 away vs Scarborough
Sept 25 home vs Mississauga
Oct 2 home vs Markham
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
