Football Alberta announces U18 Football Canada Cup coaching staff

Football Alberta is proud to announce the following coaching staff that will lead Team Alberta U18 for the next three Football Canada Cups.  The Football Canada Cup is a National Tournament for Provincial U18 teams held each July.

Alberta has been one of the most successful teams in the history of this event winning six National Championships since its inception in 1995.  For the past two events Alberta has won the silver medal.  The 2013 Football Canada Cup will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick from July 15-22.  Selection Camps for age eligible high school players for Team Alberta will commence in April.  The coaching staff for Team Alberta U18 is selected every three years and here is the crew that will handle the teams from 2013-15.

HEAD COACH

Bryan Brandford (Okotoks) – Returning for his second tour as head coach of Team Alberta and entering his twelfth year of service to Team Alberta, Coach Brandford brings a wealth of experience having coached high school for two decades as well as serving as assistant coach for the Calgary Colts and U of Calgary Dinos at various times over the years including the last Vanier Cup for the Dinos in 1995.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Brent Korte (Spruce Grove) – Offensive Coordinator for the electric attack of the Spruce Grove Panthers High School team that roared all the way to the Tier I final at the 2012 Alberta Bowl, Brent will handle the same duties with Team Alberta.  Coach Korte is a former All-Canadian lineman with the U of A Golden Bears and has coached at all levels of minor and high school football winning a Provincial Bantam Tier I Championship as a head coach in 2009.

Kyle Sedgwick (Red Deer) – The only other hold over from the last coaching staff, Kyle is the head coach of the highly successful and current Central Alberta High School League Champion Hunting Hills Lightning.  Coach Sedgwick was a member of the back to back National Champions Edmonton Huskies in 2004-05 and will be handling the offensive line for Team Alberta, which he has done so since 2010.

Scott Smith (Sherwood Park) – The receivers coach for Team Alberta will be Coach Smith.  Scott has a wealth of experience as a coach, having served as an assistant coach at Bev Facey High School for many tours as well as with the Team Alberta U17 staff from 2007-09.  He has also coached at all levels of the amateur football game most recently taking the Sherwood Park Bulldogs Pee-Wee team to the 2012 Tier I Provincial Championship.

Joe Swift (Calgary) – Handling the defensive line and special teams will be Coach Swift.  A former Academic All-Canadian for the U of Calgary Dinos in 1999, Joe has twelve years of experience coaching all levels of amateur football and has spent the past five as defensive line and special teams coach for the Calgary Colts of the CJFL.

Garrett Doll (St. Albert) – Handling the duties of defensive coordinator for the football team as well as being Principal of St. Albert High is not an easy task but Garrett did both with style and helped the Skyhawks to the Tier III final at the 2012 Alberta Bowl.  A former Calgary Stampeder linebacker, Garrett will handle the same duties coaching with Team Alberta.

Cody Erhmann (Calgary) – The head coach of one of the most consistently successful programs in Alberta at Henry Wise Wood High School, Cody also coached the defensive backs for the University of Calgary Dinos for nine seasons, the same position he will be handling for Team Alberta.  Coach Erhmann has been involved in many aspects of the development of football in the Calgary area and was on the Team Alberta Hawaii program staff last summer.

Also returning to the staff this year will be General Manager Gino Castellan (Red Deer), Athletic Therapist Nicole Lemke (Edmonton) and Equipment Manager Al Naylor (Calgary).

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
