Gaiters self disclose ineligible player

SHERBROOKE – On Friday, July 5 the Bishop’s Gaiters football team self-disclosed the use of an ineligible player during the 2012 RSEQ football season.

With the transition over the past three years, the new coaching staff audited their entire roster this off-season. It was discovered that they had unintentionally played four games with a player who did not meet eligibility policies.

“This is an unfortunate situation,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey. “We were double and triple checking our roster after the situations in our conference last year. This is an error that we regret. Once we discovered our mistake we immediately informed the CIS and RSEQ. We have a good relationship with the league offices and are committed to integrity and transparency. We have taken the necessary measures to ensure something like this does not happen in the future.”

The result of the discloser does not have any effect on the 2013 season.

In accordance with the RSEQ and CIS policies the identity of the ineligible student-athlete will not be released. League regulations stipulate that the Gaiters now forfeit their two victories from last season versus the Concordia Stingers and McGill Redmen.

The Gaiters will open the 2013 campaign on Sunday, September 1 when they host their cross-town rival Sherbrooke Vert et Or in the annual Mayor’s Cup. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Coulter Field. Get all of your Bishop’s Gaiters information at www.gaiters.ca.
