OVFL: Lions emerge on top against scrappy Bulldogs

The JV Cambridge Lions played tough to beat the Brampton Bulldogs with the final score being 31-22.

With the victory the Lions stay perfect at 4-0, going into the half way point at the season.

Leading the Lions, through the air was quarter back Mitch Weiler, with 206 yards through the air and a touchdown.

While, wide receiver Kaden Jespersen was hauled in receptions as the Lions leading receiver with 91 yards. Also, wide receiver George Monaghan IV hauled in a 62 yard touchdown.

On the ground, as unit the Lions rushed for over 200 yards. The lions lead rusher was Alex Salytchev with 134 yards and two touchdowns.

As a defense unit, the Lions had a solid performance. They continue to embody their ‘bend it but don’t break’ style of defense.

“Played a different game offensively and caught us off guard a bit their QB played really well. He is a good QB,” noted Skalos

A notable performance came from running back converted to safety Danyel Sipes. He had an interception on the day with 8 combined tackles and a batted ball.

“A really selfless guy, he is committed and he on offense and stays on for defense,” commented Skalos on Sipes.

An interesting note in this game was brief flash from the past, with Mitch Weiler returning to the safety position. While, he showing his OVFL all star skills haven’t left hauling in an interception.

On special teams, the Lions had a strong performance.

“We didn’t give up any big plays. Our coverage was good and we punted more this game then we did the last three games,” said Skalos

Additionally, another strong performance came from kicker Nathan Mclean.

He was perfect on the day going 4 for 4 on PAT’s on the day and completing a 17 yard field goal. He also had 200 yards on 6 punts and 220 yards from kickoff.

Overall, the Lions had a good game and beat a good team.

“They were a good football team, big, strong and fast. They also scored first,” added Skalos.

However, now the Lions look to next week and will be taking on the Essex Ravens on their turf.

“We are excited to play Essex. We understand with a win we are a leg up on the divisions,” said Skalos.

Kick off is scheduled for June 22nd at 3:30 pm.
