Holland College Hurricanes meet UNB Red Bombers in season home-opener

Charlottetown, PE –The Atlantic Football League championship-winning Holland Hurricanes will kick-off their first home game of the season this Saturday at the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Stadium at 1 p.m. against the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers.

The Hurricanes are coming off a hard-fought 16-7 win in their season opener, a road game against the UNB Saint John Seawolves. The Red Bombers also opened the season with a win, downing the Dalhousie University Tigers 13-2 in Halifax.

Early season reports on the Red Bombers suggest that the team has added several key recruits, especially on the receiving corps, so football fans can expect to see the team passing attack live up to the team’s name. The Hurricanes shut-down defense is expected to rise to the challenge, however.

Veteran quarterback Nick Hunsley said the ’Canes offense, which sputtered a bit under wet conditions in Saint John, is looking to put up more points this weekend.

“We have the offensive weapons, there is no doubt in my mind, we just have to unleash them,” says Hunsley.  “I think you will see us do that on Saturday.”

A productive running game, which defined the team last season, is expected to be solid again this year, led by rookie running back Chucky Ortiz. The all-state player from Woburn, Mass. High rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns against the Seawolves.

This weekend’s game, which is a rematch of last year’s championship final won 28-0 by the Hurricanes, promises to be a crowd-pleaser. Fans will be treated to exceptional food prepared by chefs from The Culinary Institute of Canada and music from the Holland College Welshmen Pep Band.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
