Bears teammates reunite to become newest recruits to join AUS team’s 2014 class.
Two Ontario teammates will play alongside each other when they make the move out East for their respective CIS careers.
Both D’Shawn Miller and Leon Metchie have committed to the Saint Mary’s Huskies for the 2014 AUS season.
Miller and Metchie join the Huskies after playing with the St. Edmond Campion Bears of the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA).
“We are very happy to welcome these young men to the SMU family,” commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.
D’SHAWN MILLER:
For the 5’10, 178 pound wide receiver, the plan to play away from home has been in the works for some time. He was impressed that the Huskies were one of the first teams to approach him and bring him down to Halifax for an official visit.
Once Miller arrived in the city, he knew this was the place for him.
“I knew I wanted to go far for university so I sent my tape out east and out west,” recalled Miller. “Coach Perry (Marchese) was one of the first coaches that contacted me so I decided to look into SMU.”
“When I went on the recruitment visit to Saint Mary’s I immediately felt good about potentially becoming a student-athlete here. SMU has a nice residence, nice facilities, a really nice football field, small class sizes and a great football team. I got to hang out with some of the players on my visit; they’re real cool guys who really treat you like your part of the team already and just made sure I had a fun visit. Halifax has a lot of interesting history, the people are beyond polite, the food is great and Halifax really felt like back home.”
Overall, Miller has nothing but gratitude towards Marchese and the Huskies and is looking forward to becoming part of the team.
“Coach Perry has been great throughout this whole recruitment process and I’m excited to start my post-secondary career as a Husky,” expressed Miller.
Miller was born in Toronto but eventually made the move with his family to Brampton, Ontario.
“I was originally a baseball player; I started playing when I was 6 and played up until I was 12,” said Miller, “Then I gave up baseball to start a basketball career which only lasted until grade 9.”
“I played my first football game in grade 10 for the Brampton Bulldogs (Ontario Varsity Football League –OVFL). It was nerve wrecking at first because I barely knew the sport, but then I was introduced to the “touchdown” and the rest is history. Everything in the game came naturally to me and I fell in love with it.”
LEON METCHIE:
The 5’8, 160 pound defensive back from Brampton, Ontario signed with the Huskies because of the comfort level he felt with the team and the school.
“I chose SMU because the environment reminded me of home,” said Metchie, who began his gridiron career in grade nine. “I really like the football program as in the field, the jerseys, the team chemistry, and especially the coaches.”
“It’s the big part of the school; I like to see they care about sports and education. It’s very welcoming.”
In addition to the Bears, the Ontario defensive back played for the Brampton Bulldogs of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Oakville Titans of the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). Not only is Metchie a defensive back, but he has also played at the running back position.
