IFAF U19: One on One with Team Canada QB Will Finch

In the game of football, it’s widely known that a teams offence and rises and falls with the quarterback. They are expected to be leaders off and off the field. Throughout his young playing career, Team Canada quarterback Will Finch has done just that. The young man from Burlington, Ontario led his team to an OFC championship and now looks to bring a gold medal back home  from the IFAF U-19 World Championships. With all the pre-game festivities and preparation before the teams first game against Sweden tonight, I had just a few minutes to catch up with the budding star.

Q: What’s it like to represent Canada on the world stage?

A: It’s an honour, not many players get to represent their country.

Q: Will all three quarterbacks on the roster split playing time? Was there a quarterback competition in training camp?

A: There was competition yes. But were all friends, we all want to win and we all have the same goal in mind.

Q: Competition is good right, it makes people better right?

A: Yes, for sure.

Q: What can you do as a quarterback to ensure Team Canada’s success at this tournament? How do plan to match up against a tough team like the U.S.A?

A: If we use the best of our abilities, defences will be struggling to prepare for us. If we utilize all that stuff, we’ll be good.

Q: What plans do you have for playing football after the tournament?

A: I just finished high school, I will be playing at the University of Western for the Mustangs on a scholarship. There is a 5th year senior playing this this year, so I am hoping to learn from him.

The future sure looks bright for this young man and for Team Canada. Catch tonights game against Sweden streamed live on CFC starting at 5pm.
