The 2-1 Hamilton Ironmen played host to the 2-1 Niagara Spears at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium Sunday afternoon in a one sided affair in which the Spears came out on top.
The Ironmen lost a tough battle 35-0 in a game in which they were missing starting QB Jake Marquette who missed the game due to an injury. Receiver and backup QB Angelo Del Sordo stepped in for Marquette under centre.
The Ironmen had a tough time generating offense as they turned the ball over 8 times leading to 21 points off the turnover for the Spears.
“Offensively we didn’t execute today” said Ironmen Head Coach Joe Wade. “We left our defense on the field for too many snaps.”
The Ironmen defense was able to force 5 turnovers themselves. Defensive back Devin Joseph led the way in turnovers for the Ironmen as he was able to intercept 2 Niagara passes.
Defensive back Dezain Brooks finished the game with 9 tackles and an interception. Defensive back Jordan Samek also chipped in with 6 tackles and an interception, as did Linebacker Levi Jamieson who collected 5 tackles and an interception.
The Ironmen were without many starters for the game against Niagara but still battled for the entire 4 quarters.
“Injuries and adversity are part of a team’s growth” adds Coach Wade.
“Maturation is a process not an event, my staff is honoured to coach our kids in this program as they are tough competitors who will continue to fight.”
The Ironmen travel to London this Saturday as the 3-0 London Mustangs play host at TD Waterhouse Stadium, kickoff is scheduled for 8:00pm.
