OVFL: Lions end season high beating the Ironmen

The Varsity Cambridge Lions beat the Hamiltion Ironmen in a commanding fashion 47-14.

With the win, the Lions finish the season 6-2.

“We started strong and finished strong and that is all we can,” said Head Coach Anthony Maggiacomo.

On offense the Lions were effective as a unit; especially through the air.

“The passing game has been getting stronger,” said Maggiacomo

Leading the offense was quarterback James Roberts with 2 touchdowns through the air to go with his 251 passing yards.

“He through the ball well,” noted Maggiacomo on Roberts.

He also had a touchdown on the ground to go with his 16 yards.

On the ground, the Lions leading rusher was Dominic Valincic , he finished the day with 59 yards. However, running back Tyler Woods; he had 58 rushing yards to go with a major.

In the air, the Lion’s receiving core was active, with 7 different receivers getting a reception.

The leading receiver was Brad Vince with 81 yards in the air. Following in suit was Jaedon Herron, he had 56 yards to go with his touchdown. Also wide receiver Simon Beeksma added a touchdown with a 31 yard reception.

“Their week in week out making catches,” said Maggiacomo.

On defense the Lions were solid. Most notably the defensive line played well, while as a unit the Lions found ways to get to the quarterback.

Led by defensive linemen Devon Pelley he had two tackles to go with a combined 4 sacks on the day.

While in the defensive secondary, defensive back Owen Prutton led the team with 6 combined tackles.

On special teams, kicker Keiran Burnham continued to kick well averaging 58.8 yards on his kick offs and converted on a field goal and 6 PAT’s on the day.

Also, the Lion’s return game continues to improve as the Lions enter the post season.

“Our return game was better than it has been and that’s great,”

Overall, the Lions look to take this win and carry the momentum going into the playoffs.

Looking to next week the Lions will be taking on the London Mustangs and hope to get redemption for the loss earlier in the season (the score favored the Mustangs 35-8.).

“First time we didn’t start strong and we got behind, but if we start strong like we have been and give ourselves a chance in the 4th quarter,” said Maggiacomo.

Kick off is scheduled for Friday July 26 at 8pm.

“We’re excited pretty pumped, their well coached and should be fun,” said Maggiacomo.
