Average score differential of 39 to 2 in first day of Canada Cup
Alberta 76 New Brunswick 0
Different year, same result as Alberta scored on every possession of the game and held the New Brunswick offense in check to the point where they never crossed mid-field, which was very reminiscent of last year’s 79-6 thrashing of New Brunswick in the same game.
Quarterback CFC TOP 100 Alex Basilis (St. Mary’s, Calgary) started things off rushing for the first two TD’s of the game from 1 and 7 yards respectively which was followed by three more Alberta rushing TD’s in the first quarter from Myles Browne (Notre Dame, Calgary), CFC TOP 100 Jacob Janke (Harry Ainlay, Edmonton) and Landon Rosene (H.J. Cody, Sylvan Lake) to make it 34-0. New Brunswick’s lone bright spot was a blocked convert on the second Alberta TD.
The second quarter saw more Alberta firepower but this time through the air as Des Catellier (St. Francis, Calgary) hooked up with Tristan Getzinger (Medicine Hat) and CFC TOP 100 Sam Clayton (Bev Facey, Sherwood Park) for TD passes of 15 and 32 yards respectively. That was followed by TD run from Browne of 42 yards and to make it 55-0 at the half.
The second half saw a running clock and TD’s from Rosene of 2 yards, Cam St. Amand (Bishop Carroll, Calgary) with a 10 yard fumble recovery, and finally Kelton Bailey (Peace River) with a 58 yard pass and run from Basilis. MVP’s of the game were Janke on offense and defensive lineman Bobby Sugai (Raymond) on defense.
Quebec 25 Saskatchewan White 7
Trailing by a single point at halftime, Saskatchewan-white battled hard in a 27-7 loss to three time defending champion Quebec in the second game of the 2014 Football Canada Cup at Griffiths Stadium at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatooon.
Quebec lead 8-7 heading into the half as the opening two quarters served as a feeling out process for both squads.
On their opening possession, Sask elected to fake punt on third down but failed to convert, giving Quebec the ball at the Saskatchewan 44-yard line.
Sask’s defense held strong, tipping a pass on 2nd down however a penalty on the play gave Quebec a fresh set of downs. Quarterback, Maxime Bouffard capitalized on the opportunity gaining another first down and later ran the ball in on 1st and goal to give Quebec a 7-0 lead. On the following play, Quebec’s kick-off bounced through the end zone to extend the lead 8-0.
On a drive that started on their own 30-yard line, Saskatchewan drove down inside the Quebec 20-yard line. An unnecessary roughness penalty against Quebec on a successful Saskatchewan field goal convert gave Sask a new set of downs. Sask took advantage on a Paul Farbacher rushing touchdown to narrow the lead 8-6. Sask settled for an extra-point following penalties on 2-point convert attempts to make the score 8-7.
Quebec answered on their following possession as Bouffard found receiver François Rocheleau in the end zone to extend the Quebec lead 15-7. Bouffard connected with Rocheleau again, this time on a 70-yard touchdown pass while a John Molson field goal to increase Quebec’s lead to a final score of 25-7. Despite the outcome Saskatchewan-white head coach Dan Houle was happy with the process of his team.
