
Week three is in the books for the Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) and the Saint John Storm continued to look strong in league play. The Storm weathered a challenge by the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators but prevailed in the game for a 19-7 victory. In the other game, the Moncton Vipers had little trouble in their quest for their second consecutive win as they crushed the Halifax Xplosion 40-0.
Here are the results from Week three action:

Saint John Storm 19, Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators 7:
At Scotia South on Saturday afternoon, the Saint John Storm kept their undefeated record intact by defeating the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators 19-7.
On the Storm’s first drive of the game, running back Lisa Harlow dove in for a one yard touchdown score. However, the team was not successful on their conversion attempt.
The Gladiators led the game by the end of the first half when fullback Kristen Chatterton ran into the end zone for a four yard touchdown score while the conversion attempt by Alex Black was good. As a result, the Gladiators went into halftime with a 7-6 lead.
Kendra Jones catapulted the Storm back into the lead by scoring a major in the third quarter of the game but the conversion was blocked. Harlow sealed the victory for the Storm with a touchdown while Meghan Mallett was successful on the conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.
Defensively for the victors, Ashlee Clements had a sack while Michelle Young Mather caught an interception. The trio of Harlow, Trina Graves and Jill Cox sacked Gladiator pivot Black for a key play in the final quarter. Moreover, the Storm registered two fumble recoveries in the game.
With this win, the Storm’s record is 3-0. As a result of the loss, the Gladiators are now 1-3.
Storm defensive coordinator Larry Harlow gives a postgame assessment of both teams.
“Saint John was slow and non-aggressive in the first half while Fredericton moved the ball well on the ground but was inconsistent,” explains the Storm’s defensive coordinator. “The second half saw Saint John offensive line come to life and that seemed to spark their defense.”
“Fredericton couldn’t find the next gear and tired under the pressure.”
Players of the game were Harlow for the Storm while Chatterton took top honours for the Lady Gladiators.
Next week ,the home and home series continues for both teams. The rematch between the Saint John Storm and Fredericton RV Lady Gladiators is slated for Saturday June 16, 2012 at KVHS. Kickoff is 4:00pm.

Moncton Vipers 40, Halifax Xplosion 0:
In a Saturday late afternoon rain delayed game at Wanderer’s Grounds, the Moncton Vipers crushed the Halifax Xplosion for their second consecutive win.
Offensively for the Vipers, Justine Barter led the way by scoring three touchdowns while Marie-Noelle Beaulieu found the end zone twice. Tina Theriault also scored a major in the victory. Tara Keohan was successful on four of six conversion attempts.
Karen Newcomb led the Vipers defensive unit with 12 tackles and a kickoff recovery. Karen Lewis and Lisa Bourque each registered a sack which resulted in losses for the Xplosion. Furthermore, Beaulieu caught an interception.
As a result of the win, the Vipers record now stands at 2-1. The Xplosion are the basement dwellers in the league standings and are still in search of their first win as their record is 0-3.
The home and home series for the Moncton Vipers and Halifax Xplosion continues on Saturday June 16th, 2012 at Rocky Stone. Game time is 3:00pm. Proceeds from Saturday’s game will go towards the Canadian Cancer Society.
