The win mark’s McMaster’s first undefeated regular season since 2003 when the team rolled to an unblemished regular season record and a Yates Cup victory. With Calgary’s loss to Regina last night, McMaster finishes the regular season as the only undefeated team in the CIS.
Quinlan who finished the game going 16 for 19 with 217 yards with one throwing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns was pleased with the perfect season, but was already focused on the 2012 playoff run.
“It’s something we can celebrate for a little bit, but this is a veteran group and we know better than to be too happy with that,” said Quinlan. “We are looking forward to the playoffs — being 8-0 and lose out in the first round doesn’t mean anything. We have to go out and win them all now.”
The Marauders’ defence shut down the Golden Hawk offensive attack allowing just 121 yards. This was McMaster’s first shutout since September 26, 2008 vs. York. Laurier also conceded two safety touches.
McMaster’s Joey Cupido of Hamilton was the top defensive player posting seven tackles and collecting the lone interception of the game for a 29 yard return.
“[The defence] worked their butts off putting a zero on the board and that means something,” said Marauders’ Head Coach Stefan Ptaszek. “They’ve given up the fewest points in the OUA and I think that means something to them as well; they deserve to be recognized as if not the best group in Ontario then one of the best.”

Quinlan capped the 2012 season by breaking McMaster’s all-time passing touchdown mark surpassing Ben Chapdelain who played for the Marauders from 1997-2001. That record was broken with 5:10 remaining of the second quarter when he found John Vandeweerd of Burlington, Ont., on a one-yard pass to make the score 24-0 at the time.0
He also punched in two from the ground scoring a 12-yard touchdown at 3:46 of the second while his first came at 5:15 of the opening quarter on a 20-yard rush.
Tyler Crapigna of Nepean, Ont. opened the scoring with a 43-yard field goal at 8:41 of the first quarter.
Backup quarterback Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont., converted a five-yard pass to Dahlin Brooks of Kitchener, Ont., to make the score 33-0 with five seconds remaining in the second quarter. He also added a rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to close the scoring at 43-0. He would finish 13 for 17 with 153-yards passing and one touchdown in relief of Quinlan.
McMaster holds a bye during next week’s OUA quarter final games and will return to action on November 3rd at 4:30pm – with the game broadcast on theSCORE. Next week Windsor will battle Western in London, Ont., while Laurier will take on Queen’s in Kingston, Ont.
McMaster will play either Windsor, Western or Laurier pending on outcomes. Guelph is the other team holding a quarter final bye.

Hawks qualify for playoffs after loss to Mac Laurier falls 43-0 to No. 1 McMaster in regular season finale
HAMILTON, Ont (October 20, 2012) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-5) claimed the final playoff spot after a 43-0 loss to the No. 1 McMaster Marauders (8-0) at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Laurier qualified for the OUA playoffs after the Western Mustangs defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 32-29 on a last second field goal. They will face the No. 6 Queen’s Gaels in Kingston in the OUA Quarter-finals next week.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 43-yard Tyler Crapigna (Nepean, Ont.) field goal. Three minutes later Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., capped a 56-yard drive with a 20-yard rush to go up by 10 after the opening quarter.
McMcaster took control of the game in the second quarter as Quinlan ran in his second major of the day followed by a one yard touchdown pass to Josh Vandeweerd of Burlington, Ont., to open up a 24-0 lead.
Two drives later, Quinlan was replaced by Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont., and he promptly connected with Dahlin Brooks of Kitchener, Ont., for a five yard touchdown to put the Marauders up 33-0 at the half.
With the offence struggling under starting quarterback Travis Eman of Brampton, Ont., in the first half, Jeffries turned to backup James Fracas of Waterloo, Ont., for the second half. The first year quarterback gave the Hawks some life but Laurier still couldn’t find the scoreboard.
After the Hawks conceded a team safety in the third quarter, McMaster rounded out the scoring when Ferguson hit Spencer Moore of Hamilton, for his second touchdown p ass of the game.
“We didn’t do very well,” commented head coach Gary Jeffries after the game. “We just, somehow, have to find a way to move the football and generate some offence. If we don’t do that, it’s just too hard.”
On the day, Laurier managed to accumulate just 121 total yards of offence, with Fracas providing the biggest boost, throwing for 94 yards and rushing for another 20.
Laurier’s defence also had their work cut out for them in trying to stop Quinlan and the top-ranked Marauders. Drew Galpin of Kitchener, Ont led all players with eight tackles, the fifth game in a row he’s been the Hawks’ leading tackler. Those eight tackles give him 59 on the season, the fifth most a Laurier player has ever recorded in a single campaign.
Kicker Ronnie Pfeffer of Kitchener, Ont., also put his name into the Laurier record books. Hi s 10 punts for 373 yards in the game gave him 72 punts for the season, the fourth most in Golden Hawks history, and 2,499 yards punting on the year, sixth most all-time.
NOTES: This will be the second straight season that the Hawks and Gaels meet in the OUA Quarter-finals…last year, Queens eliminated Laurier with a 14-10 victory…attendance at the game was 2,213
