Montréal bolsters line with two commits, one #CFC100

Carabins welcome two Québec commits to their 2017 class.

The Montréal Carabins offensive line has gotten a whole lot bigger with the additions of offensive linemen #CFC100 Olivier Phanor from Cégep du Vieux-Montréal and Frédérick Labbé Desmeules from Collège François-Xavier Garneau.

Montréaler Olivier Phanor had several schools calling for him, but it was his hometown team that won in the end. “I this this school will make me not only a great student and football player, but a great man ready for life and will give me the experience I need to be successful in life,” he said.

“During my multiples visits, I automatically felt like I was home and as if I was already part of the Carabins’ family. The way the coaches welcomed me and how the players who I met for the first time interacted with me was phenomenal. I think the football program is the best in Canada simply because of the facilities, the way the players are treated and the team spirit is amazing. Guys are tight, like a real family, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

The future education student also has nothing but praise for the Carabins’ coaching staff. He said he thinks they are the best in Canada. “They all have a lot of experience and I wanted to be with coaches that are professional, but at the same time tight with their players,” he said.

“All the coaches that I met from other universities told me how their school/football program would make me a good student and player, but none of them told me how much of a better man I would become as the one from Montreal. The plan that they gave me academically is I think perfect for me and fit me for the kind of person I am,” he added.

The giant 6’3, 290lbs guard, who also plays centre, has only played football for four years. He said he has only played football seriously for two years, starting with Les Indiens du Collège Ahuntsic (RSEQ Division 3). After a season with Les Indiens, he transferred to Les Spartiates du Cégep du Vieux-Montréal (RSEQ Division 1).

UBC, McGill, Saint Mary’s, Windsor, Sherbrooke, McMaster, Ottawa and Bishops were also interested Phanor.

Frédérick Labbé Desmeules will be heading down the St. Lawrence River from his hometown of Québec City to reach Montréal. He was drawn to the Carabins because of the mantra surrounding the team. “I chose Montreal because the values conveyed by the coaches reach me. We (the Carabins) have one of the most qualified coaching staff in Canada. I can not wait to start my career with them,” he said.

Desmeules added that it is a good school with a very good sports organization. The young guard, who also plays tackle, is 6’3, 275lbs. During his Cégep years, he played with Les Élans du Collège François-Xavier Garneau (RSEQ Division 1). In high school, he suited up for Les Condors du Saint-Jean-Eudes (RSEQ).

Starting at the age of nine, Desmeules first hit the field with the Mini Rouge et Or, which is a program run by the Laval University. Between 2008 and 2010, he played with Les Alérions du Petit Séminaire de Québec (RSEQ). During those years, he was recognized for his excellent play on the line in high school. In 2013, he won the Football Canada Cup with Team Quebec. He was also recognised by the Montréal Alouettes for his perseverance in school
