Mustangs & Destroyers battle in opening week scrimmage (Nova Scotia Varsity)

The Dartmouth Destroyers and Metro (Halifax) Mustangs (Nova Scotia Varsity Football League – Varsity age group) played a controlled scrimmage friday evening at St. Mary’s university. As always, the defenses were ahead of the offenses but there were some strong offensive performances as well. Here were the hilites:

– both teams traded interceptions, the first by Destroyer Matt Belfontaine and the second by Mustang Jevan Buchi
– Acadia Axemen (going into 2nd year) running back Zach Clark (picture) had a few strong runs early in the scrimmage
– Sackville high graduate Connor Graves (playing FB & LB) had one big run and numerous tackles for the Mustangs
– Mustang defensive ends Ryan Jones and Devon Marshall (Team Nova Scotia) had strong performances
– Dartmouth QB Alex Field (MT A commit) hooked up with receivers Aaron Fraser (the “mouth”) and Tyler Patterson early in the scrimmage
– defensive standouts for the Destroyers included DE Christian Plante, Sam LB Mitchell Neuwenstein, DE/OT Phoenix Grouse, and Will LB Andrew Gardiner
– Destroyer offensive line formed some impressive pass pockets during the scrimmage
– SMU commit DB Kenzie MacNeil (Lockview / Team Nova Scotia) has a strong scrimmage breaking up a pass mid-way through the contest

Destroyer head coach Larry Sampson and Mustang head coach Rob Morgan were happy with the scrimmage. Mustang OC Todd Galloway (Wilfrid Laurier grad) showed off a little bit of the ‘laurier motion’ offense. Todd will be assisting the St. Mary’s Huskies in 2011.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
