Playing in the states can be tough, but when you enter your NCAA career prepared like Jacob Ruby was, the transition becomes much easier. “I played 2 years of Prep Football in the U.S. so I felt better prepared. The game is incredibly faster, and unlike high school the playing field is much more even and the competition is much better.” The biggest difference between American and Canadian players is athleticism and that would come as no surprise to anyone. “The athletes I have faced in the U.S. are simply faster and stronger then the competition in Canada, I think it has to do with the high school system of football and the lack of off season training.”

In high school, Ruby had one thing on his side that allowed him to stand out amongst his fellow team mates and other players in the league. “My size and athleticism was definitely my advantage in high school, which also transferred over to the next level. I also had a “do whatever it takes” attitude, I left the country as a 15 year old to a military boarding school just to play football and hopefully get a scholarship.”

For players in high school now, Ruby has simple advice. Advice that he himself wish’s someone told him. “My advice to younger players would be to GET IN THE WEIGHT ROOM. That was the one aspect I wish I could have focussed on more because there is a huge focus on that in the game not only in U.S. Colleges, but High Schools too. ”

So far in his NCAA career, Ruby has been apart of some big moments, but none bigger then what he would put at the top of his list. “My biggest moment was this past season starting my first game against Duke, we were underdogs in the game and we came out with a hard earned win. A week before the game we had lost our head coach in a incident and pushed through the adversity for the win.”

Jacob Ruby will put on football equipment for as long as he can and when his playing days come to an end, the offensive tackle still has a plan for his future. “I would like to play football for as long as I can, when thats over I want to go back home and work for my family.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
