The JV Toronto Jr. Argonauts lost against the Sarnia Sturgeon 23-8 last Sunday in Sarnia. The Jr. Argos can’t seem to find their stride on the road as they now have a 0-2 record outside of Toronto.
This week saw the return of QB Treyion Charles after being injured for the past three weeks. The game got off to a rough start for the star QB as he fumbled on the first offensive play, which led to a Sturgeon touchdown. The second offensive drive was not to go much better as the Jr. Argos gave up another fumble inside their own 20 yard line. The final score after the first quarter was 23-0.

The Jr. Argos started the second quarter looking to blast through the Sturgeon defense with their running game. A big gain by Gord Brown on fourth down helped invigorate the Jr. Argo offense. The following play QB Treyion Charles connected with Patrick Saunders for the Jr. Argos first score. The drive was capped off with a two point conversion by Rayshawn Smith.

The second half was a draw as neither team could improve their scores. The Jr. Argo defense stepped up to stop the Sturgeon advance, but could not come back from their first half deficit. The Jr. Argos had the chance to capitalize on several opportunities including a fourth and goal on the Sturgeon one yard line. This was, according to assistant coach Jensen Shrubb the “nail in the coffin”. Dropped passes and metal errors killed any chance of a Toronto victory.
Sarnia’s QB Josh Elsley wreaked havoc on the Jr. Argos defense as he played like a running back, keeping the ball on several occasions.
The Jr. Argos will play Peterborough next week for a shot to have a home play-off game come the end of July. The team now falls to eighth place in the OFC, but can bounce back up the standings with a win. “The team had a great week of practice and we have all moved on from what was a disappointing performance in Sarnia” says Shrubb. The going will be tough as the fourth place Peterborough Wolverines look to continue their winning season as well.
The game will take place at 2:30PM in Peterborough.
