ONTARIO FOOTBALL CONFERENCE (OFC) WEEK 1 RESULTS:
WINDSOR AKO FRATMEN 35, HAMILTON HURRICANES 14
GAME RECAP BY BECCA LUDEN, OFC MEDIA
The Windsor Fratmen opened their season in Hamilton at Tim Hortons Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Windsor was on the board first fairly early into the first quarter with a touchdown from Austin Lumley. Noel Levi also found the end zone for Fratmen before the end of the first. Windsor took a 17-0 lead in the first quarter.
Although the first seemed to be a struggle for the Hurricanes they managed to hold Windsor off in the second… for a completely scoreless second quarter.
Windsor started off the second half of thee game with a field goal from Clarke Green, which brought their lead to 20. The Hurricanes picked up several yards through penalties on Windsor’s behalf, and ended up on the Fratmen 1 yard line. Jurrel Gaddishaw brought it over and into the end zone for the first Hamilton touchdown of the game.
Heading into the final quarter, Windsor was carrying a 20-7 lead over the Hamilton Hurricanes. Hamilton would add another touchdown in an attempt to cut away at Windsor’s lead, but the Fratmen weren’t having it as Cody McCann ran one in as well as Armand Botkich.
The Hamilton Hurricanes fell to a 35-14 loss to the Windsor Fratmen to open their season and will now play the GTA Grizzlies Saturday on the road. As for the Fratmen they will be back home to host the London Beefeaters on Saturday.
BURLINGTON BRAVES 10, GTA GRIZZLIES 6:
GAME RECAP BY JOHN METCALFE
With a new head coach and not many returning veterans, it would be safe to say that the 2015 edition of the Burlington Braves entered their season opening game with a lot of questions on the evening of August 15th at Nelson Stadium.
One area that the Braves have an answer is kicker/punter Vasilie Paulopoulos whose field goals from 37, 49 and 38 yards out as well as a wide field goal rouge were enough for the Braves to hang on for a 10-6 victory over the G.T.A. Grizzlies. It was the season lid lifter for both teams in the Junior Division of the Ontario Football Conference. Shaquille Foster rumbled down the sideline 64 yards for the Grizzlies only points. Foster led all game rushers with 156 yards on the ground from 11 carries while Braves back Alex MacFarlane was their leading ground gainer with 105 yards on 21 rushes. Neither team generated an effective passing game as the Braves pivots were 6 of 12 for 29 yards while the Grizzlies passers completed 3 of 12 for 43 yards.
The game was in doubt until the last minute when the Grizzlies put together a drive late in the 4th quarter. G.T.A. had three attempts from the Braves five yard line, but, Brave’s Tyson Delic stopped Foster at the one yard line to preserve the victory. On defence, Braves were led by Stew Vandermade who recorded 7.5 tackles and for G.T.A. Jendayi McBean had 5 tackles.
The Braves will have a bye in Week 2 and will return to the Nelson Stadium gridiron on Saturday August 29th versus their neighbors from the west when the Hamilton Hurricanes will visit. Kick off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
