OFC Week 4: Hurricanes win lopsided affair, Sooners finally in win column

Week 4 in the Ontario Football Conference would see the Game of the Week turn into a lopsided affair as the Hamilton Hurricanes blew through the Windsor AKO Fratmen 36-3.

The Hurricanes would use the aerial attack to almost perfection as quarterback Kyle Sewell finished 16 of 33 for 208 yards and threw two touchdowns.  He would spread the ball to eight different receivers as Andrin Masotti would make a game high seven catches for 64 yards and a score.  Matt Coates would make the other touchdown reception.  Sewell would also scamper to pay dirt with four yard touchdown run.

The Hurricanes ground game wasn’t as effective, gathering just 46 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively the Canes would force five AKO turnovers including four interceptions.   Jacob Barry would return his pick 23 yards to the house and would lead the club with seven solo tackles.  Connor Hitchcock, Tyler Swick and Anthony Trabucco also intercepted passes.  Linebacker Farouk Musa would also get on the scoreboard after picking up a fumble and rumbling 33 yards for a touchdown.  Ben Osmow and Tyler Corbett would record the Hurricanes two sacks.

The Hurricanes (4-0) remain the lone undefeated team in the Canadian Junior Football League and will visit the Ottawa Sooners (1-3) Saturday night.

The Windsor AKO Fratmen would be frustrated by the Hamilton defence, gaining just 162 yards and didn’t score a point in their lone meeting of the season.

They would use two quarterbacks as Mike Mallender finished 10 of 20 for 87 yards and threw two interceptions.  Austin Lumley was four of 12 for 34 yards and also threw two picks.  Their favourite target seemed to be Shayne Rice who hauled in four passes for 47 yards.

The AKO ground game saw Brad Marsden lead the way with 39 yards, while Lumley tallied 31 yards.

The only point AKO would score in the first half was a single off a Anthony Malandruccolo missed 49 yard field goal.

Defensively the Fratmen would collect two sacks, including a fourth quarter safety.  John Moynahan and Mason Beekhuis shared a sack, while Tyler Demarte recorded the other one.  Lumley and Tevon Lawrence each recovered a fumble.

The Fratmen (3-1) will visit the GTA Bears (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at Chinguacousy Park.

 

The defending OFC champion London Beefeaters recorded their second straight win with a 30-17 road win over Predators Football.

Beefs’ quarterback Josh Beach would finish 14 of 23 for 158 yards and had a touchdown pass to Josh Woodman.  Beach would also rush five times for 25 yards and had a major.  The veteran receiver Woodman would make four catches for 63 yards.

Avery Lawrence would lead the Beefeaters on the ground with 11 carries for 51 yards.

Kicker Carmen Gentile would hit the scoreboard with 12 points.  He was a perfect three for three in field goal attempts and converts.

The Beefeaters defense was also a factor on the scoreboard as Jess Town picked up a fumble and ran it back 10 yards for a touchdown.  Josh Franks would also recover a fumble and the lone sack.  Both Isaiah Nganga and Derek Coleman picked off passes, while Town and Tyler Annen blocked kicks.

The Beefeaters (2-2) will host the Burlington Braves (1-3) on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.

The Predators Football offense would gather 215 total yards against the Beefeaters, 207 of it through the air.

Quarterback Jonathen Beitz finished 13 of 28 for 207 yards and threw two touchdown passes.  His “go to” receiver was Karsten Beney who caught a game high 11 passes for 158 yards and had a major.  Ryan Watt-Dennis also hauled in a 43 yards touchdown strike.

Beitz would also lead the ground attack with 11 carries for 55 yards.

The Preds defense would force three turnovers including two interceptions from Emin Spahic and RJ Edwards.  Spahic would also recover a fumble.  John Carreiro would lead the Predators defense with seven solo tackles, while Ryan Yantz chipped in with six stops.  Trevor Frey, Grant Litt and Sharieff Peru would each have a sack.

The Predators (2-2) will host the St. Leonard Cougars (3-1) on Saturday night.

 

The Ottawa Sooners recorded their first win of the season, a 29-13 road win in Burlington despite getting outgained 287-228.

Sooners quarterback Matthew Levasseur would complete 10 of 19 for 124 yards.  Steve Watson would lead the club with four catches for 36 yards.

On the ground Carl Bernade rushed eight times and would score three touchdowns, his longest gain being just six yards.  Tyler Moran carried the majority of the load rushing 14 times for 52 yards.

Kicker Quinton Soares had a big game hitting all three field goal attempts.

The Sooners defense played their best game, forcing four turnovers. Both John Skubic and Prenel Cave intercepted passes, while Ryan Lawther and Steve Dignard recovered fumbles.  Lawther would also lead the club with seven solo tackles. Dignard and Daniel Omara each had sacks.  Chad Girimonte blocked a kick.

Saturday night the Sooners (1-3) will host the #1 team in the country the Hamilton Hurricanes (4-0) at Keith Harris Stadium.

The Burlington Braves fall to 1-3 on the season following the loss despite gaining 287 yards on the Sooners.

The Braves would use two quarterbacks as Mickey Trumper finished 11 of 17 for 104 yards and threw an interception, while Mark Divito was six of six for 72 yards and a score.  Both Tyler Bistrovich and Cyrlin Cadete caught touchdown passes.

Alex McFarlane led the ground game with 10 carries for 79 yards.

The Braves defense was led by Richard Beckstead who tallied a game high eight tackles while Steve Connery recorded the lone turnover with a pick.

The Braves (1-3) will travel to London to face the Beefeaters (2-2) in the only OFC game on Sunday.

 

The St Leonard Cougars would use a balanced attack recording their first shutout of the season with a 29-0 victory over the GTA Bears.

Through the air quarterback Nicolas Lepine finished just six of 15 for 84 yards and a touchdown.   Alvaro Ulloa threw his first pass of the season, a completion of 53 yards to Yafet Mesheshe.  Moy McDonald would make three catches for 41 yards.

On the ground the Cougars would pound the ball with Duqueslin Pierre-Louis who carried 11 times for 116 yards.  Kodee McDonald would tally a rushing touchdown.
Anthony James Gomes and Cedrick Legros would also score majors.

Defensively the Cougars pitched their first shutout of the season as six players had multi-tackle games.  Jelani McLaren picked off a pass and recovered a fumble, while Malundu Bukasa and Legros also jumped on fumbles.

The Cougars (3-1) will travel to face Predators Football (2-2) on Saturday night.

The GTA Bears have now been shut out twice in the first four games of the season following the loss to the Cougars.

They would gain 184 yards offensively as quarterback Craig Myers completed seven of 16 for 105 yards.  His favourite target was Shaquille Johnson who made three catches for 36 yards and Justin Pritchard made two catches for 65 yards.

The Bears ground game tallied just 70 yards, led by Myers who rushed seven times for 40 yards.

One of the bright spots for the Bears is the fact the defense would force three turnovers.  Austin Maggiacomo, Rishard Campbell and Robert Siino recovered fumbles, while Johnson picked off a pass.  Thomas Fortin led the Bears with seven solo tackles.

The Bears (0-4) will host the Windsor AKO Fratmen (3-1) on Saturday afternoon.
