Tonight saw the W.F. Herman Secondary School Griffins win the Western Bowl Championship against the Assumption College Lions, 36-22.
It was a back and forth affair that saw a close score at half time, 14-7 in favor of Assumption. Running was the name of the game tonight as all but one touchdown was scored on the rush. It was a down to the wire game that only broke in favor of the Griffins late in the fourth quarter.
For the majority of the game, the Griffins spent trailing the Lions until the third quarter, when the ‘mean green’ from Herman battled their way out in front. Excellent offensive efforts by running back Jaydon Gauthier helped bring the Griffins from behind almost single handedly. The second half saw three touchdowns for Gauthier and a rush total of 260 yards. He averaged almost ten yards per carry, an unreal feat for any running back. Herman head coach Harry Lumley was very happy with Gauthier’s performance saying, “I can’t even put it into words. We knew we had to get him the rock, because he can carry our team. He is an unbelievable kid.”
Assumption fought as hard as they could, but they could not take down the fourth ranked team in Canada. As this was their second bowl appearance in two years, they hoped their fortunes against Herman had changed as the two played each other in 2010. Although the outcome was the same, this game was particularly exciting.
When asked about his motivation coming into this game, Jaydon Gauthier said that “I am one of the veterans of this team, I was playing not only for me but also my team. I was also playing for every one we told back home that we were going to win the Western Bowl”.
