Marcus DiLoreto scored a touchdown and added a rouge to lead CFC #36 Cardinal Newman Cardinals to their third consecutive Hamilton Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association (HWCAA) Championship title. The Cardinals got past Bishop Tonnos Titans 15-9 in Friday’s final.
The Titans got on the scoreboard first as pivot Mathew Michalski connected with Cameron Wright for a 43 yard major to take a 6-0 lead.
However, the Cardinals responded as quarterback Matt Metcalfe found Clark Adams for a 74 yard touchdown in the second quarter.
At halftime, the Cardinals had a slim 7-6 lead.
In the third quarter, Metcalfe connected with DiLoreto for a 15 yard major to put further distance between the Cardinals and Titans.
Joe Radojewski was successful on and 18 yard field goal to narrow the gap between the two teams in the fourth quarter; however, that is as far as the team would get. DiLoreto’s field goal attempt in the final frame was wide; however, the team was awarded the extra point (rouge) as the Titans did not get it out of the end zone.
By virtue of this win, the Cardinals will advance to the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) final, where the team will meet Halton Tier 1 Champions, CFC # 38 Assumption Crusaders on Thursday November 21st at 2:00pm. The winner of this game will earn a spot in the OFSAA Bowl Series where they will meet the Toronto District College Athletic Association (TDCAA) champion on Friday November 28th at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.
