The regular season in the “A” and “B” divisions are set! A few teams had key wins to boost the confidence and clinch a bye, while others are taking a turn for the worse at a crucial time. It’s okay though, teams now have a week to prepare themselves for the post season.
Here’s how it all unfolded;
Resurrection Phoenix 28, Elmira Lancers 10
CFC Top 50 Resurrection won the clash of 4-0 football teams in the most anticipated matchup of the week.
It was a close battle in the first half as both teams traded scores. It wasn’t until the second half when the Phoenix rose from the ashes and took control of the game.
“ We knew we had to be a new team in the second half. We started the second half running the ball and our offensive line started to win the battle up front,” says Resurrection head coach of the team’s second half play.
They were anchored by running back Dominic Valincic who rushed for two touchdowns.
Resurrection finishes their season perfect at 5-0 and in sole possession of first place. The Lancers, meanwhile, finished in second. Both teams earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
Armour calls his season tremendous for the school.
“We faced some tough competition all season. All of our staff had high expectations of our players and they worked extremely hard to earn a perfect season,” he says.
St. Benedict Saints 37, Cameron Heights Golden Gaels 6
The Saints concluded their 2013 campaign with a crucial victory over a team directly below them in the stands.
They jumped out of the gate early, already building up a 23-6 lead by the mid-point of the second quarter. It was just cruise control from there.
Saints head coach Robert Lowes says he thinks his team has been overlooked this season. This game was no different for him.
“Cameron was certainly thinking that they would handle us at home but that certainly wasn’t the case as the score indicates,” he says. “It was a big win on the road again which certainly builds confidence throughout the team.”
Brad Vince was the star of the game for St. Benedicts. The four year veteran and offensive captain now has 5 TDs in his last two games.
“He’s in our exceptional athlete program at school (called LEAP) and he is an outstanding individual as well as having exceptional pass catching abilities. Brad has really elevated his game in the past few weeks,” says Lowes.
For Cameron Heights, they finish the season at 2-3 and will face Grand River in the first round of the playoffs.
The Saints (4-1), have guaranteed themselves a spot in at least the quarter-finals, earning a first-round playoff bye thanks to owning the tie-breaker over Eastwood.
Jacob Hespeler Hawks 48, Eastwood Rebels 0
The Hawks continue to soar way above their competition. They finish the year 5-0 with yet another thrashing of an opponent.
This time it was the Eastwood Rebels, who started the year off 3-0 and only allowing a single point before struggling their last two contests.
Keiran Burnham (picture) lead the charge for Jacob Hespeler. The kicker/receiver had 18 points for the Hawks.
“He’s definitely a CIS caliber kicker,” says Hawks head coach Greg White. “Keiran was and is an excellent soccer player, but I think his focus has changed to football.”
Over five games, Jacob Hespeler has outscored its opponents 278-13.
Eastwood coach Adam Ziegler says beating Hespeler is clearly not easy.
“Play a perfect game against them, execute and don’t turn over the ball,” he says.
Up next for Eastwood is a first round date with St. Mary’s (0-5). The winner will play Elmira in the second round.
Sir John A MacDonald Highlanders 19, Waterloo Vikings 18
What a dramatic finish! In took two overtimes to find a winner in this one, but eventually the Highlanders ended up victorious to push their record to 3-2.
It was truly heartbreaking for the Vikings who have yet to record a win yet this season. Leading late in the fourth quarter, Sir John A MacDonald has a late strike to tie the game at 15 and force overtime.
Kicker Nathan Mesher was the difference maker in this one, who had two field goals and a single.
Waterloo will have to face a very difficult Eastwood Rebels side in the first round of the playoffs while SJAM will get winless St. Mary’s
Huron Heights Huskies 44, Monsignor Doyle 7
The Huskies continue to flex their muscles in the “C” division with a convincing win over winless Monsignor Doyle.
Evert Davy and Austin Randall each had two scores in a very balanced scoring attack from the Huskies offense. Five receivers had one catch or more for the Huskies.
Head coach Aaron Holmes says this was the idea all along.
“I think this will just make our team stronger in the end. We have great overall team speed but are just inexperienced in some positions,” he says.
Huron Heights remains tied for first at 4-1 with St. David. They can make a push for the division with a win and St. David loss next week. The Huskies face the unbeaten Galt Ghosts next week.
Holmes says he thinks his side can hand Galt their first loss.
“They are an excellent team, and we respect the size and physicality that they bring to the field. To be successful, we need to use our speed in all positions, and tire them down,” he says.

The winless Lancers gave Phoenix quite a ride, but in the end Resurrection won to improve to 4-1.
Resurrection is tied for first in the “A” division and still have a shot at winning the division title.
St. Benedict Saints 55, Monsignor Doyle 3
Rough going for Monsignor Doyle, who can’t seem to buy a win.
In an offensive onslaught, the Saints rolled to victory.
The Saints are now second in the “C” division with a 4-1 record.
Waterloo Vikings 21, Sir John A MacDonald Highlanders 14
A balanced scoring attack from Waterloo hands SJAM their first loss of the year.
Waterloo improves to 3-1 with the win, just a half game back of the Highlanders who sit tied for first at 4-1
