Last week, the Westdale Warriors faced off against the Waterdown Warriors.
The week before, Westdale had just come off a blowout victory against the Churchill Bulldogs, but this week they knew that they weren’t in for an easy go. The Waterdown Warriors had grit in their teeth, were looking for vengeance and they were battling for that precious first place spot.
To start off the game Westdale’s kickoff team was on the field. The ball was sent deep by Matt Oliver but the Waterdown return squad was there to play. Taking the ball back for a 60 yard return into Westdale territory. Setting up Waterdowns Offence with good field position.Marching it the rest of the way down the field in to Westdales end zone for six putting Waterdown up 7-0. Then quickly adding on another Waterdown touchdown putting the score to 14-0.
But now falling behind and off to a slow start Wetsdale’s offence had the ball in there own zone. With some hard runs and spot on passes Westdale was moving the sticks and in scoring position. Then finally Malavolta hit Joey Ricottone in the end zone moving the score to 14-7.
Now going into half time with the score still at 14-7, Westdale was down a touchdown and had some serious work to do.
Half way through the third quarter this one had turned into a slug fest. Hit after hit, this one looked like it would go down to the last man standing. But with both teams moving the ball, it was only a matter of time until someone struck again.
But finally, after both teams exchange blows. The Waterdown Warriors took the ball to the air for another touchdown, adding to their score making it 21-7. But then Westdale struck back with Malavolta hitting Tyler Walker in the end zone for six.
As the second half moved on so did the score, as Westdale added on another touch down by Tyler walker through the air and Sam Malavolta taking it into the end zone himself. Changing the score to 30-27 for the Waterdown Warriors and nearing the end of the fourth quarter, putting Westdale’s chances farther and farther away.
But Westdale wasn’t giving up there. They were into the two minute warning of the last quarter and were going to all measures to reach those first downs. With a fumble by the Warriors with less than a minute left on the clock Westdale’s chances were over, and with another touchdown added on by Waterdown, the Westdale group fell to Waterdown 37-27.
With a well fought game this one was most definitely a battle. With some great runs by Matt Oliver and Ethan Paxton and some amazing hits by Andrew Pacheco, Cody Ricottone and Charlie Taggart. In the end of it all, it was one mistake that truly put this one away. Now the Westdale Warriors will have a hard week of practice to prepare for their next game on home turf and they won’t be taking things lightly.
