Nathan Zavys-Cox started playing at the peewee level last fall as a linebacker for the Toronto Thunder after never even watching the sport beforehand.
This past summer, the 12 year-old became a quarterback and will be the bantam Thunder’s starter in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
It has been challenging for Nathan to play the sport due to his late birthday causing him to play with older kids. However, he has been successful and having a lot of fun.
The Thunder standout takes quarterback lessons year round, and is on the school track team in the offseason. He also throws the ball around frequently at Birchmount Stadium.
Nathan is hoping to use the upcoming Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) as a measuring stick.
“My goals at OPC (Ontario Prospect Challenge) are to keep getting better as a quarterback and also see how other kids my age are doing compared to how I am doing,” said Nathan. “I also want to get as much football experience and coaching as possible.”
“I also want to make the final OPC game. I tried out last year as a linebacker and didn’t make it but I am a better quarterback than linebacker so maybe this year.”
Payton Manning is his idol because he is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever and he is still playing and breaking records.
Overall, Nathan is passionate about the sport for a few reasons.
“I love to play football because I have friends on the team and it is something I am pretty good at and can keep getting better at,” explains the quarterback. “It also keeps me in good shape and is a fun and strategic sport.”
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
