OVFL: Junior Varsity Bucs cruise to victory over GTA rivals

The Newmarket Junior Varsity Bucs blew out their local rivals, the Markham Raiders, 61-20 last weekend to cruise to their second straight blowout victory.

Coming off a 41-20 win at home against Guelph, the Bucs picked up right where they left off and brought a whole lot of firepower to the field last weekend.

Harrison Mancuso threw for 139 yards at quarterback for Newmarket,, but running back Jonathan Ferni-Cole stole the show as he rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Curtis Fillier also pitched in with 74 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Eric Devries caught two touchdowns and William Grichmanoff scooped up an interception to lead the defence.

The Bucs have won their past three games after dripping two of three before that.

The Bucs’ win avenged a blowout loss the varsity team suffered at the hands of the Raiders earlier in the day. The Bucs improved their record to 5-3 and are still very much alive in the playoff hunt. The Raiders, however, dropped to 1-5 and are looking for answers heading into their final two games of the season.

Raiders’ Quarterback Matt Prucha threw for 196 yards and found the end zone on the ground. Dale Wright rushed for 80 yards and Anthony Fogazzi led the receiving core with three receptions for 65 yards.

The Raiders face the Etobicoke Eagles and the Metro Toronto Wildcats in the final two games of the season. They will look to improve defensively, as they have allowed less than 50 points just once this season. They will also look to notch their first win of the year.

The Bucs have a bye next week and will gladly take the time off to improve and gear up for a possible playoff run. They’ll look to finish off the season two games over .500 against Pickering in Week 9.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
