It was a dominating performance by the Junior OVFL Cambridge Lions as they kicked off their 2012 Season with a 67-14 win against their long time rival the Guelph Bears. The Lions were propelled to victory through a strong performance from the Offensive line which gave Quarterback Matt Skalos the opportunity to run the offence and he did a great job connecting with George Monaghan and Dominick Valincinic for touchdowns. The rest of the Lions offence was on their game as well with touchdowns coming from Fullback Travis Simpson, as well as QB Matt Skalos, and Jothsn Salfarlie who added two rushing touchdowns in his rookie debut in the OVFL. Danyel Sipes also scored a rushing touch down and an 85 yard kickoff return. The Lions running backs combined for a total yardage of 355 on 33 carries.
On the defensive end the Lions were solid, led in a great effort by the Defensive line. They were unwavering in their attempts to get to Guelph Quarterback Job Reinhart who they sacked a total of eight times. The Lions defensive charge was led by Tyler Gibner, along with a number of other major contributors, most notably that of Bradly Bartlett and Ryan Mitchell.
The lions received great contributions from the special teams, scoring three of ten touchdowns when they were on the field. Most impressive was Alexander Salytchey who returned the ball four times, two of which were missed field goals that he ran in for touchdowns. He had a total of 276 yards in returns.
Kudos must be given to the Guelph Bears’ Quarterback Job Reinhart, who completed eleven of twenty one pass attempts. As well as showing great strength , poise and elusiveness in evading the Lions while in the pocket. At times he was clearly frustrating the Lions defence. The Junior OVFL Cambridge Lions hope to carry their momentum into Saturday when they will take on the Brampton Bulldogs in a 5:00 PM game.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
