OVFL: Myers Riders & Spears to battle for Junior Varsity Championship

There will be a new junior varsity champion crowned in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

On Saturday afternoon, the Niagara Spears dethroned defending champions London Jr Mustangs 33-5 to advance to the final.

The Spears will face last year’s runners-up, Ottawa Myers Riders who defeated Toronto Thunder 56-28.

Saturday’s championship will mark the third consecutive year the Myers Riders have made in an appearance in the Championship Final. They have lost the previous two contests.

Here are the results from both conference finals in the OVFL Junior Varsity Division:

Jean Paul Cimankinda

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 56, TORONTO THUNDER 28:

At Beckwith Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Jean-Paul Cimankinda was unstoppable as he scored six touchdowns and rushed for 421 yards on 421 yards on 31 carries to guide the Ottawa Myers Riders past the Toronto Thunder 56-28.

Owen Clement tallied a 64 yard major and added six PAT’s in the victory.  Hayden Tripp rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries.

On defence, Danny Lukusa caught an interception as well as registered five solo and two assisted tackles.  Liam Paquette added three solo and four assisted tackles and caught an interception for the Myers Riders.  Malik Yusuf recorded a solo sack, four solo and six assisted tackles.  AJ Oickle chipped in with five solo and six assisted tackles.

As for the Thunder, Kiondre Smith tallied a major and amassed 169 yards on 10 receptions.  Shedler Fervius scored a touchdown and had 53 yards on two receptions.  Daniel Adeboboye also added a score and rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries as well as 31 yards on two receptions.

#CFCOPC Kavantye Bailey rushed for 47 yard on seven carries and racked up 44 yards on two receptions in the loss.  Jackson Taylor was successful on four conversion attempts.

Marckus Jean-Loescher registered three solo and 10 assisted tackles to lead the Thunder defence.

NIAGARA SPEARS 33, LONDON JR MUSTANGS 5:

On Saturday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium, Cole Burniston scored a touchdown and rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries as the visiting Niagara Spears dismantled hosts London Jr Mustangs 33-5.

Travis Arp completed 10 passes in 15 attempts for 165 yards and a passing touchdown in the win.  Hayden Riley added two field goals (30 yards, 21 yards) and three PAT’s as well as 62 yards on three receptions.

Maksym Nazartchyk tallied a major and rushed for 621 yards on 18 carries.  Additionally, Joshua Ferguson added a score and had 23 rushing yards on seven carries.

Owen Wallace scored two touchdowns and amassed 64 yards on two receptions.  Furthermore, Chase Osinga had 32 yards on four receptions.

Eduardo De la Garza led the Spears defence as he caught two interceptions as well as six solo and seven assisted tackles. Jack Scordino also caught two interceptions and registered five solo and nine assisted tackles in the win.

As for the Jr. Mustangs, Chase Brown rushed for 98 yards on 19 carries while Tazie Vang Bell had 26 yards on seven carries. Tamurie Bringi also had a 15 yard carry while Mitchell Deziel had a 26 yard reception in the loss. Brian Garrity added a 23 yard field goal.

On defence, Daniel Valente registered three solo and seven assisted tackles.  Siwon Lee chipped in with three solo and nine assisted tackles. Daniel Fitzgerald added four solo and seven tackles for the Jr. Mustangs.
