OVFL & OFC Week 5 (JV) Recap: Pickens tears it up & Smith shines

Both the Cumberland Panthers and Ottawa Myers riders are the only remaining undefeated teams after Week 5 junior varsity action in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

After their 56-49 victory over the Scarborough Thunder, the Panthers have an unblemished 5-0 record.  The Myers Riders are currently 4-0 after earning a 59-0 shutout victory over the Oshawa Hawkeyes.

Other teams to earn Week 5 wins include Hamilton Ironmen, Etobicoke Eagles, Kingston Grenadiers, Essex Ravens, London Jr. Mustangs and Ajax Pickering Dolphins.

Among the Week 5 Ontario Football Conference (OFC) winners include Burlington Stampeders, Brantford Bisons, Peterborough Wolverines, Oakville Titans, Twin Cities Predators, Clarington Knights and Huronia Stallions.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

Hamilton Ironmen JV Week 5 win

HAMILTON IRONMEN 24, NIAGARA SPEARS 14:

At Kiwanis Field, Daniel Skuse scored on a 92 yard kickoff return as the Hamilton Ironmen defeated the Niagara Spears 24-14.

Isaiah Joseph rushed for 141 yards on 17 carries for the Ironmen.  Pivot Alexander Di Pietro completed eight passes in 18 attempts for 135 yards and two passing touchdowns in the victory.  David Benedetti added a 32 yard field goal and three PAT’s.

ETOBICOKE EAGLES 21, HALTON COWBOYS 20:

At Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School, Justice Allin tallied three majors and rushed for 270 yards on 39 carries as the Etobicoke Eagles edged the Halton Cowboys 21-20.

Liam Murphy was successful on all three conversion attempts for the Eagles.

As for the Cowboys, Alex Brophy had 115 passing yards, a passing touchdown, two rushing touchdowns and rushed for 90 yards on eight carries in the loss.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 44, MARKHAM RAIDERS 8:

At Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Connor Allan scored a touchdown and rushed for 85 yards on 13 carries as the Kingston Grenadiers cruised to a 44-8 victory over the Markham Raiders.

Nikolas Daniele added four PAT’s for the Grenadiers.

Cumberland Panthers

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 56, SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 49:

At Millennium Field, the Cumberland Panthers got by the Scarborough Thunder 56-49.

Baxter Balthazar tallied four majors and rushed for 116 yards on nine carries for the victors.  Jamal Mavinga scored a touchdown and amassed 106 yards on six receptions.

Pivot Pascal Roy Lepensee completed 12 passes in 18 attempts for 148 yards and a passing touchdown.  Zachary Batal was successful on seven conversion attempts for the Panthers.

Connor Smith racked up 515 passing yards and completed 26 passes in 44 attempts and six passing touchdowns for the Thunder.

Shedler Fervius scored three touchdowns and amassed 316 yards on seven receptions (average of 45.1 yards per reception).  He also added seven PAT’s for the Thunder.  Raign Harris tallied two majors and had 117 yards on 11 receptions in the loss.

Essex Ravens

ESSEX RAVENS 30, CAMBRIDGE LIONS 15:

At Villanova High School, Matthieu Pickens scored four touchdowns and rushed for 372 yards on 30 carries as the Essex Ravens were victorious over the Cambridge Lions 30-15.

Pickens also had 71 yards on four receptions in the win.

Pivot Dominic Johnson completed 11 passes in 25 attempts for 193 passing yards.  Jack Barei added an 18 yard field goal and three PAT’s.

Zach Herzog led the Ravens defense as he caught an interception as well as registered five solo and six assisted tackles.

As for the Lions, Jackson White completed 17 passes in 34 attempts for 263 yards and two passing touchdowns.  Nathan MacLean scored a touchdown and racked up 101 yards on four receptions (average of 25.2 yards per reception). He also added four PAT’s.  Gordon Lam had 98 yards on four receptions in the loss.

Ben Drummond led the Lions defense with nine solo and 10 assisted tackles.  Jared Beeksma added seven solo and two assisted tackles.

LDN JR Mustangs

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 42, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 20:

At Loyola Catholic Secondary School, Juquon Ullett tallied two majors and rushed for 212 yards on 24 carries as the London Jr Mustangs defeated the Mississauga Warriors 42-20.

Isaac Rigby scored a touchdown and had 84 yards on two receptions (average of 42 yards per reception). William Upfold was successful on six conversion attempts for the Mustangs.

Ben Schmidt completed six passes in 10 attempts for 122 yards and three passing touchdowns.

Trey Bryden tallied a major and had 77 yards on seven receptions for the Warriors.  Pivot Alexander Lavric completed 11 passes in 24 attempts for 131 passing yards in the loss.

Justinkyle Jodhan recorded two solo sacks as well as eight solo and four assisted tackles to lead the Warriors defense.  Jamoy Thompson added six solo and two assisted tackles.

Ottawa Myers Riders JV Week 5

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 59, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 0:

At Oshawa Civic Stadium, Brian Franklin scored three touchdowns and rushed for 113 yards on seven carries as the Ottawa Myers Riders earned a shutout victory, 59-0 over the Oshawa Hawkeyes.

Jalla Lansanah tallied a major and rushed for 92 yards on five carries for the Myers Riders.

AJAX –PICKERING DOLPHINS 35, YORK SIMCOE BUCS 22:

At St. Maximillan Kolbe High School, Daniel Davy tallied two majors and rushed for 105 yards on six carries as the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins defeated the York Simcoe Bucs 35-22.

Kenan Clarke scored two touchdowns (including one on a kickoff return) and amassed 148 yards on six receptions for the Dolphins. Pivot Justin Aiberti completed 20 passes in 26 attempts for 286 yards and two passing touchdowns in the win.  Cameron Luke added two PAT’s.

Damian Lombardi caught two interceptions – one which he converted into a touchdown score as well as registered a solo and eight assisted tackles to lead the Dolphins defense.  Aiden Kruger registered six solo and seven assisted tackles.  Tyler Murno recorded three solo sacks as well as added two solo and six assisted tackles.

As for the Bucs, Nolan Lovegrove scored twice and had 97 yards on four receptions.  Pivot Michael Bazzo completed 14 passes in 20 attempts for 246 yards and two passing majors. He also added two PAT’s in the loss.

Phil Girouard led the Bucs defense as he recorded a solo sack as well as registered seven solo and five assisted tackles.

Jake Anderson caught 5 balls for 95 yards and a TD

Brendan Marr, Spencer Mason and Ethan Baylis combined for 110 yards rushing

Defensively

Quentin Forgie had 10 tackles

Alex Formosa had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery

David Nethersole had 6 tackles and a fumble recovery

Kenny Levesque had 5 tackles and Ethan Baylis had 4 tackles

The Cougar’s lead 19-3 early in the game and controlled the game on both sides of the ball.  After some special teams miscues and sloppy play, the Predators took the momentum and never let go of it.

“We moved the ball well the entire game, but couldn’t find the end zone after the flurry of points early on.  The defense played very tough for three quarters but ran out of gas down the stretch.  They torched us on special teams and we were unable to recover.” Head Coach Kevin Pugh stated
