OVFL Recap: JV Limestone Grenadiers continue their perfect record

[NEWMARKET, ON.]

Despite the blistering heat and being stripped of three touchdowns due to penalties, the Limestone District Grenadiers still came out on top against the Newmarket Bucs in Ontario Varsity League football junior varsity division. With a final score of 27-14 the Grenadiers build on their perfect season. They are currently tied for first place along side Pickering Dolphins and Mississauga Warriors.

Although the Grenadiers pulled out of Newmarket under the “W” column head coach Mark Magee believes they have a lot to learn in order to stay competitive in this league. Offensively they played a sound game outside the ten yard line, having 219 passing yards and 112-yards on the ground. Inside 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 is where the Grenadiers need to beef it up.

“We need to be better in the scoring zone and take advantage of all of our opportunities,” said Magee.

The junior Grenadiers defensive line played a superb game. They penetrated the Bucs offence with four sacks and only allowed 48 passing yards by Newmarket quarterback Harrison Mancuso who had a 3-of-24 game. Yardage gained while rushing was no different. The Grenadiers frontline only allowed 64-yards rushing. Twice Newmarket elected to take safeties instead of punting from very deep in their own end. The Grenadiers defense also kept the Bucs key player wide receiver Dylan John (15 receptions for 306-yards) to just one reception for a ten-yard gain.

The junior varsity Limestone District Grenadiers now hold a 4-0 record. They will pound the gridiron in Week 5 against second place Cumberland Panthers (3-1).

“Cumberland is a very talented team with playmakers on both sides of the ball,” said Magee. “It will be a tremendous challenge for our defense and offense.”

“Our offense will need to move the football and score a few points to take pressure off of our defense.”

Both junior and senior divisions will be at home on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Game times are 1:00pm and 3:30pm respectively at Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Kingston.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
