OVFL Recap: JV London Junior Mustangs fall short against Guelph Bears

[Guelph, Ontario] With their second game having finished up only days ago, the London Junior Mustangs Junior Varsity league are looking to pull their team together. Having lost their second game in a row, this time to the Guelph Bears, the team will need to learn from their mistakes if they hope to do well in the division in the coming weeks.

In the first quarter of the game the JV Junior Mustangs earned a quick 3 point lead thanks to a field goal kick by #8 Dante Mastrogiuseppe. Guelph easily recovered from this lead, and by half time the score was 7-3. Sean Vogan (#21, QB) powered his way through over 20 yards in the third quarter gaining another touchdown pass for the Junior Mustangs. Labon Mason (#85, RB) had a solid touchdown reception on a pass from Cernanec, running under 40 yards in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter, which was quickly followed by a completed two-point conversion. The game’s final score at Guelph was 35-24.

It was apparent from the beginning of the game that the JV Junior Mustangs were not playing a complete game on both sides of the ball. Sputtering to a start in the first half of the game, the team’s offensive line was unable to gain a solid footing until the second half of the game, which was the exact opposite of what their defensive line was doing. It didn’t help that the starting Quarterback was off the field due to an injury, and was replaced by #5 Jordan Cernanec (QB), who performed admirably. Nor was it a benefit to the team to have lost #50 Linebacker Tom Waight to a one game suspension as a result of a dispute with a player from Pickering during last week’s game.

With the team currently holding a 0-2 record for the season, it is vitally important that something changes before their next two games, since match-ups between both Essex and Cambridge generally decide the division title. “The Silver lining is that we’ve yet to play a complete game on both sides of the ball, and this is something to improve.” Said Head Coach Nawaz Tahir, “We have to be more consistent, so we can play more consistent. We need consistent football for 60 minutes, so we need to get that intensity up.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
