The Cambridge Varsity Lions are in full swing as the new season approaches. The city of Cambridge and the local School board have reached an agreement to install a turf field at the home field of the Lions, Jacob Hespeler Secondary School. However the project will not be completed until late August, so for the majority of the season the Lions will be calling Preston High School’s field home. When the turf is in and the new facilities complete the Lions feel that it will be a great asset to their club.
In the interim, they are concentrating on getting ready for the new season at PHS. They are very hopeful for the 2012 season with a number of seasoned veterans on the roster who have developed through the Cambridge Minor Football Association. With the players moving up from a very successful Jr. Varsity in the recent past, they believe that this year’s team will be a great squad.
Coach Anthony Maggiacomo is returning to be the Head Coach as well as the Defensive Coordinator. The offence will be led by new comer former Head Coach of the 2011 OVFL Champion Bantam Lions, Mark Paddock.
The team itself has a number of returning players as well as a good mix of new talent who have come of age. Returning players will be led by Linebackers Zack Hoare and Robin Petrie, Offensive Tackle Zack Van Keerebroeck, Wide Receiver Eric Cussimano, and Running Back Glorian Ganza, The team thinks that with this core group of veterans they have a great group to make a run at the Championship.
They are also looking to get some big contributions from their first year players both on Offence and Defence. Led by Line Backers Drew Walden and Wyatt Hogan-Crawford, as well as Defensive Backs Ashton Oilkey and Greg Vanderkooy along with the support of Defensive End Dequan French-Gray. The Lions are also looking for their young offensive players to step up, particularly Quarterbacks James Roberts and Austin Gordon, who will be throwing to Wide Receivers Adam Mueller and Simon Beeksma.
The Lions organization is looking forward to having a successful season in 2012, as much of the team has enjoyed success in their careers thus far. The coaches are hoping that this will translate over to the Varsity level. It should be an interesting 2012 season to say the least. The Varsity Lions will open their season in Guelph on May 26[SUP]th[/SUP].
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
