OVFL: Varsity Junior Mustangs trample Sabercats in home opener

Saturday proved to be the testing grounds for the London Junior Mustangs (Varsity), one that they passed easily, as they faced off against the Sault Ste. Marie Sabercats.

The game started out in favor of the Junior Mustangs, with a 7-point lead that was a result of long pass to Wide Receiver Nate Behar. Sault Ste. Marie followed this by tying the score shortly after. The ensuing Junior Mustangs drive went the length of the field, culminating in a score on a slant, again going to Behar.

Not to be out done, the Sabercats once again brought the score to an even 13-13. Just before halftime, Wide Receiver Matt Deciccio scored a touchdown for the Junior Mustangs, but the kick was missed, making the score at 19-13.

During the second half of the game it became apparent that the main goal of Head Coach Chris Bertoia was to wear down the Sabercats. Offensively the team had control of the clock most of the time, keeping the Sabercat defense on the field for long periods of time. A 30 yard touchdown reception by Ethan Loft (WR) brought the Junior Mustangs up another 7 points.

In terms of the Junior Mustangs’ defense, their front 7 created a lot of problems for the Sabercat’s offensive linemen, swatting the ball left and right, taking the wind out of their sails. The Defensive Backs for the Junior Mustangs also proved to be instrumental in stopping any further yardage gained by Sault Ste. Maries’ star Alex Morrison (WR). The final score ended with a solid 42-13 result for the Junior Mustangs.

“It was a great first victory, we’re gaining momentum from the training camp”, said Coach Bertoia, “It’s always nice to win the game, and still come away with things that need improvement.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
