OVFL: Varsity Raiders set their sights on first winning record in team history

It took 10 games dating back to last year, but the Markham Raiders are finally in a position to climb over .500 in their second season as an OVFL franchise.

The Raiders sailed to their first victory of the season last weekend with a 21-7 victory over Kingston, and are looking to extend the streak to two in a big home matchup against Pickering this Saturday.

Despite a slow start to the season where the Raiders found themselves on the wrong end of a 28-3 drubbing in Week 1 and had their Week 2 game postponed due to rain, the Raiders bounced back with a great performance and improved their record to 1-1 heading into Week 4.

QB Marcus Arkarakas threw for 132 yards, but the running game inflicted the most damage as Arkarakas and his running backs, Graeme Ward and Nicholas Morassut, combined for 3 touchdowns and 187 yards.

The Raiders improved in nearly every department in Week 2. Their offence was able to finish off plays, the defence lived up to its suffocating and aggressive billing, and special teams proved to be an asset as opposed to a setback like in Week 1.

Markham has a great chance to climb over .500 for the first time in the team’s two-year history, as they welcome a beatable Pickering team that has lost two of their first three.

The showdown happens on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
