OVFL: Junior Varsity Eagles fall to Cumberland Panthers by 19
Coach Alex Delo is still happy with his team’s performance and was able to take away lots of key strengths from this weekend’s game.
The offense for the Eagles had a great first half sparked by a 65 yard catch by Andrew Atkinson which brought his team within one score. Quarterback Bryan Smith was playing smart football and helping his team drive the field, gaining great field position each series. Smith later hooked up with Inderpaul Nijjer in the in the 3rd quarter on a 40 yard pass. The Eagles fought hard, had some great plays but could not overcome the great game played the Panthers.
Defensively, Yanni Taxidis showed why he is a highly touted recruit. He intercepted the ball on the 2 yard line in the second quarter, ensuring the Panthers could not put six more points up on the board. Week 1 defensive player of the week, Justin Butler, had another solid game with plenty of crucial tackles.
Andrew Atkinson had a huge game with 3 catches, 110 yards and a touchdown. While running back Jess Amankwaa had his season debut helping the Eagles on the ground. He was a workhorse for the team with 24 carries and 92 players.
Coach Delo thought his team showed a lot of heart and resilience against a very strong Cumberland team. Committing a few minor mistakes was the only reason for their loss this week. They corrected some first half mistakes and almost made the comeback in the second. Next week the Eagles look to stick to the game plan and preach the fundamentals of football. They want to be more consistent on either side of the ball and bring a victory back to Etobicoke.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
