Questionable call?

OVFL: Halton Cowboys lose game against Niagara Spears after questionable call

After a strong showing against Hamilton last week, the Halton Cowboys marched into Niagara determined to beat the Spears in Week 7 OVFL action.

The Spears came into the game with  a 4-1 record, which ties the team for second place in the OVFL standings. However, the Spears have been scrutinized due to their weak schedule which included a few winless teams.

Coming into week 7, the Cowboys continued to become accustomed to their newly implemented offense, which stood out in last week’s loss.

Once again, the Cowboys sustained a heavy passing attack this week, eventually leading to a 25-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Todd Hoover to Darryl Jean.

Cowboys linebacker Brett Colangelo had an excellent game – intercepting a pass and returning a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown. Colangelo has been a bright spot on a struggling defense, leading the team in tackles while recording two sacks and two interceptions.

With under two minutes left in the game, the Cowboys went up 15-8 as the Spears conceded a safety. On the next series, the Cowboys fumbled a hand-off which ultimately gave the Spears excellent field position.

The Cowboys were able to contain the Spears’ offense, which led to a 4th down and long. On 4th down, Niagara threw the ball and it landed incomplete. However, it drew a questionable defensive pass interference call that allowed them to tie the game with seconds left.

Consequently, the Spears were able to capitalize in overtime, catapulting the Spears to a 21-15 victory.

The Cowboys are on the road Saturday when they take on Sault Ste. Marie Sabrecats.  Game time is at 1:00pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
