Quittenton, five others, commit to Varsity Blues

The Varsity Blues football program is pleased to announce that Richard Quittenton is among six recruits that have recently signed letters of intent and committed to play football, while pursuing an education at the University of Toronto in the fall of 2011.

“All six student-athletes are great additions” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg DeLaval. “Richard has Toronto roots and is a tall, mobile quarterback who could potentially be our starting quarterback in the future. Trent has a strong leg and will challenge [Andrew] Lomasney for the starter’s role.”

A 6-foot-5, 205-pound quarterback, Quittenton headlines the latest batch of group of football freshman eager to wear the Blue and White. The Ajax, Ont., native led the St. Mike’s Kerry Blues to the 2008 Metro Bowl title before leaving for Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia.

Joining Quittenton is running back Milthon Nevy and kicker/punter Trent Robinson. A native of Burnaby, B.C., Nevy was named the most valuable player on the Coquitlam Falcons in 2010. A two-time high school football all-star and the prokicker.com No. 1 ranked kick-off specialist in 2010, Robinson was named the West Ferris Trojans most improved player this past season.

Mitchell McGuffin joins the Blues defensive line in 2011. The London, Ont., native and former hockey player won a gold medal as a member of the London Jr. Knights at the 2009 Canada Cup. McGuffin is a highly touted defensive end and plans to study humanities starting this fall.

Rounding out the latest commitments are two recruits with strong ties to University of Toronto athletics.

Named the Huron Heights Secondary School defensive MVP, JJ Lam was the recipient of the Bob Morrow award as the senior athlete of the year in 2011. His father, John, was also a defensive back for the Varsity Blues, as well as a point guard on the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team.

Calgary native Umberto Cappella joins his sister, Anna-Maria, who is a member of the Varsity Blues women’s water polo team. The Calgary native was also a two-time city champion as a member of the St. Mary’s Saints rugby team.

Students who sign a letter of intent and commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
