RECAP: Carabins dominate Gaiters (stats/VIDEO)

Montreal  – The Montreal Carabins won a convincing 41-7 victory in front of an appreciative crowd of 5100 spectators in a noisy CEPSUM filled to capacity.

The Carabins scored 41 unanswered points and the defense went to work.

The Carabins set the tone on the first play of the game. Gabriel Cousineau (Administration, HEC Montreal) launched a pass to Mikhail Davidson (Economics) for a 45-yard  pass

“It always helps to have more energy to start with a big game like this,” said Davidson. “Our group of receivers and Gabriel have worked hard in the offseason and you see the results.”

The Carabins completed the sequence with a 31-yard field goal by Félix Ménard-Brière (Mathematics). After a safety was conceded by the Gaiters, Ménard-Briere was added to the scoring with a 42 yard field goal early in the second quarter.

The combination of Cousineau and Davidson wreaked havoc in the first half. They two connected for touchdowns of 43 and 34 yards. Cousineau continued his good work as he launched a third touchdown before halftime. This time, Cousineau connected with Sean Thomas Erlington (Health and Physical Education) for a  26 yard touchdown. The Carabins attack gained a total of 402 yards in the first half.

“I had an opportunity to capitalize on an excellent group of receivers and the offensive line also did a good job,” said Cousineau. “And when our running game was working, we made things tough for the opposing team’s defense.”

“We even took time to go. We had good sequences, but got there in the end. ”

Gabriel Cousineau 2

In addition to his three touchdowns, Cousineau finished the night with 15 completions in 25 attempts for 286 yards He also ran 51 yards. However, the quarterback threw an interception in the first quarter.

In the second half, Nicolas Dubeau (Mathematics) stood out. After a 39 yard kickoff return, he rushed for 37 yards in four carries before scoring a 3 yard major. This extended the Carabins lead 41-0 by the end of the third quarter. A conversion by Menard-Brière and a third safety was conceded by Bishop’s to round out the scoring.

“We are always more effective when our offense is balanced,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “On defense, we knew they liked to throw the ball, so we needed to get to their quarterback to prevent it and take away his rhythm.”

On the other side of the ball, Bishop’s only score came in the fourth quarter. Travis Eman connected with Nathan Heather for a 1 yard touchdown score. The Gaiters attack only amassed a total of 179 yards as opposed to 490 yards for the Carabins. Jordan Rwiyamilira (educational intervention) led the Carabins in tackles with a total of five.

For the fifth consecutive year, CEPSUM Stadium sold out for the opening game. The Carabins won each of those games. It was also the 14th sellout in the history of the Carabins, or since their return in 2002.

The Carabins (1-1) return to action at home on next Friday evening as the McGill Redmen (0-2) will be the visitors.  Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

Gaiter loss to Carabins 2014

MONTREAL – Rookie quarterback Travis Eman tossed his first ever touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter but it was all the offense the Bishop’s Gaiters found on Friday night in Montreal as they fell to 0-2 on the year.  The No. 5 Carabins rolled to a 41-7 victory in their home opener of the RSEQ University Football season.

Eman (Brampton, Ont.) took the reins of the offence in the fourth quarter as the Gaiters trailed 41-0. He connected with Nathan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) on third-and-goal at the 10:03 mark of the final frame.  The Gaiter had run a successful, well-orchestrated fake field goal just three plays earlier to put them in that position.

Heading into the fourth quarter the Carabins controlled the game. After a long completion to open the game Montreal seemed poised to run away, however the Gaiters defense stood strong early on.  They held the Carabins to just five first quarter points.  A Ryan Hector (Brampton) interception on Montreal’s second possession of the game gave the Gaiters their only momentum, however it was short lived.

The Carabins rolled in the second quarter.  Pivot Gabriel Cousineau (Montreal) found Mikhail Davidson (Montreal) twice for major scores of 43 and 34 yards that helped pace Montreal to a 31-0 lead at the break.

Before the third quarter started Montreal had amassed 402 yards of total offence to the Gaiters 88.  They also had an edge of almost five minutes in time of possession. By the time the game came to a close Bishop’s narrowed the gap statistically, however were not able to make a dent in the score.

“The first half was a tough half,” said Gaiters bench boss Kevin Mackey. “We are a young team and made some mistakes. I do like how the guys came out in the second half and played hard. We got a lot of work to do and have some stuff we need to fix.”

The Gaiters (0-2) must re-group quickly from their 41-7 loss at the hands of No. 5 Montreal (2-0) on Friday night. Their road does not get any easier as they host the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or (1-0) on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. in their home opener.
