RECAP: Carabins reach Dunsmore Cup Final for second straight year [stats]

Montreal – The Montreal Carabins earned a 40-13 win over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or Saturday afternoon in the RSEQ semi-final before 3360 spectators at CEPSUM. . The Carabins earned their ticket for the Dunsmore Cup Final where they will face the Laval Rouge et Or at Laval University’s TELUS Stadium.

The Carabins won their first home playoff game against Sherbrooke since the defeats to the Vert et Or in both 2010 and 2012.

“Winning at home in front of our fans, family and friends is always special,” stressed the Head coach Danny Maciocia. “There were also many of our former players here today and were part of this victory.”

Receiver Regis Cibasu, who played his first playoff game in his career, had an outstanding performance. He set a team record with 14 pass receptions in a game. He amassed a total of 146 yards, in addition to a spectacular hit. While Carabins had a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, he jumped into the end zone to get rid of double coverage and caught a touchdown pass of 12 yards.

“It was an exciting game and very different from what I experienced at the college level,” said Cibasu. “I gave everything I could today.”

The Carabins scored on their second attack sequence, taking advantage of a change made by the Vert et Or’s defense. Gabriel Cousineau launched a lateral pass to Sean Thomas Erlington and reached the end zone for a 54 yard touchdown score. Mathieu Hebert responded for the Vert et Or with a 21-yard field goal.

Kicker Félix Ménard-Brière scored a single in the second quarter to increase the Carabins lead 15-3 at the half.

The Vert et started the second half strong. Jeremi Roch threw two consecutive passes to Sébastien Blanchard. The second, 16 yards, was good for a touchdown and it reduced the gap to 15-10.

Defense creates turnovers

In the third quarter, the Carabins stopped the Vert & Or attack twice on consecutive turnovers. First, Jean-Samuel Blanc managed to pin the opposing kicker before he managed to clear the ball. The Carabins took advantage of this good field position with a 1 yard quarterback sneak by Cousineau.

In the next Vert et Or sequence, they were stopped in the middle on third-and-less than a yard to cross. The Carabins followed up with a 24 yard field goal by Louis-Philippe Simoneau. In the fourth quarter, an interception by Maiko Zepeda led to a failed 42 yard field goal attempt by Simoneau This brought the score to 26-10.

“We were able to create turnovers when needed and this is something that we have not succeeded much during the season,” said five-year veteran Mathieu Girard. “After the past few years of defeats, I felt a little pressure at first, but the whole team supported each other and it was fun.”

On the first play of the game, Jonathan Boissonneault-Glaou recovered the ball breakaway that was dropped by receiver Sébastien Blanchard.

In the last quarter, after a 26-yard field goal by the Vert et Or’s Mathieu Hébert, the Carabins added two touchdowns late in the game to solidify their victory. Cousineau connected with Maxime Fournier-Rioux caught for 23 yard major. Nicolas Dubeau followed up with a run of six yards to the end zone.

Gabriel Cousineau had another strong game by completing 25 of his 33 pass attempts for 269 yards and two passing touchdowns, all without throwing an interception. Running back Sean Thomas Erlington completed the day with 134 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Armed with a streak of eight consecutive victories, the Carabins will go to Laval’s TELUS Stadium next Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Rouge et Or won the other semi-final over the  Concordia Stingers 74-18. It will be a sixth appearance in the final of the Dunsmore Cup for the Carabins since their last return in 2002.
