RSEQ RECAP (SEMIS): Thomas Erlington helps Carabins erase deficit in 4th quarter, Laval disposes of Concordia to reach Dunsmore Cup final [stats]

Montreal  – The Montreal Carabins overcame a deficit late in the game to earn a 31-24 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or Saturday afternoon in front of 3812 spectators at CEPSUM.

The Carabins will face the Laval Rouge et Or in the provincial final for the third consecutive year, next Saturday in Quebec.

Trailing 24-15 with 15 minutes to play, the Carabins bounced back with two touchdowns to advance. Led by Gabriel Cousineau, the offence succeeded on a 92 yard drive after passes of over 20 yards for Louis-Mathieu Normandin, Guillaume Paquet and Régis Cibasu. Cousineau completed the drive with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Samuel Nadeau-Piuze.

On the next drive, the Vert et Or played boldly trying to cross on third and 26. Frederic Chagnon stripped the ball away from Jeremi Roch to bring the ball back to the Carabins offence. The Carabins followed with another touchdown from Sean Thomas Erlington on a two-yard run. The Carabins overtook the lead, 29-24.

Gabriel Cousineau RSEQ semi 2015

“This long drive and the breakaway recovery were two turning points,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. Having seized the opportunity to take the ball on third changed the momentum in my opinion.”

“When we play with confidence, it is difficult to stop us,” Gabriel Cousineau added. “We ran a lot early in the game and that allowed me to observe the defensive hedges.”

“We wanted to start fast and finish stronger and I think we succeeded. ”

The Carabins defence stood up to the Vert et Or as the iffence failed to cross more than 12 yards on a later offensive drive. They also conceded a safety.

“We led by seven points and we knew it was an excellent fifth year quarterback who would try to shoot the ball and we limited him,” said Jonathan Boissonneault-Glaou who recorded a sack at the end of the game. “It will be another big game next week.”

“We will have to play our best football in order to go further.”

Sean Thomas Erlington RSEQ semis 2015 1

The Carabins have imposed their ground attack in their first drive. On the first play, Sean Thomas Erlington sped 52 yards. Four plays later, he himself completed the drive by scoring a touchdown on a 25-yard run.

“I think that early in the game, it gave energy to the team,” said Thomas Erlington, smiling. “The offensive line blocked really well today.”

“Since the defeat in Sherbrooke, we thought we could have run more. It’s always good to be able to contribute to the victory.”

The star running back had another impressive outing with gains of 212 yards in 28 carries, never seen in series in the history of the Carabins.

“Sean and myself talked a few weeks ago,” told Maciocia. “I told him to find openings and run with his eyes.”

“I think he is more comfortable and we see that he can be really special.”

Precision kickers of both teams struggled. Sherbrooke’s Louis Desautels  missed his first two attempts over distances of 28 and 24 yards. The Vert et Or has to settle for two singles. His third attempt was blocked by Junior Luke.

As for the Carabins, Louis-Philippe Simoneau failed on a 31-yard field goal attempt after Zacary Alexis gave the ball back to the Carabins after he caught an interception.

Nadeau Puize

In the last minute of the first half, Gabriel Cousineau has launched a touchdown from eight yards for Samuel Nadeau-Piuze.

At halftime, the Carabins retired to the locker room with a lead of 15-2.

The match swung in the third quarter. First, the Vert et Or’s Rami Saintus, recovered a fumble in the Carabins territory and ran into the end zone for a 29 yard score.  Frédérick Caron returned the ball 87 yards to score on the punt return to give the Vert et Or a 16-15 lead. The Vert et Or have added a rouge.

The Vert & Or then added a third touchdown in the third quarter. Jeremi Roch managed a touchdown pass of 19 yards to Vincent Cléroux-Gaudreau.

Roch finished the game with 186 passing yards by completing 16 of his 32 passes. For its part, Cousineau managed 14 passes in 23 attempts for 191 passing yards. In total, the Carabins dominated 459-260 for total pffence yards.

Laval – Laval Rouge et Or has easily handled the Concordia Stingers 52-8 Saturday at Laval University’s TELUS Stadium, gaining a berth in the RSEQ final.

Laval will have the opportunity to regain the Dunsmore Cup, a symbol of RSEQ supremacy on Saturday November 14 at 2pm at home. Montreal Carabins, who won over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in the other semi-final will be the visitors.

This will be the 13 th consecutive RSEQ final for the Rouge et Or. Tickets for this game are already on sale  at 418 656-FOOT or online.

As for the almost flawless Rouge et Or performance Saturday, Glen Constantin prepared the team and explained the mentality of the team.

“These games are then often prepared and won during the week, with the focus and work of both players and coaches,” said Constantin of the victory before 8814 supporters.  “After all, we still have to excute.”

“This is one of our better victories this season. We were treated to a great performance by our quarterback and our offensive line has done as well. Our defense was very tight once again.”

First half-way

Laval hit hard in the first quarter. Antony Auclair, got in between the Stingers defensive backs Stingers and caught a 35 yard reception from Hugo Richard to give the Rouge et Or a 7-0 lead in the middle of the quarter.

Then, Felix Lechasseur added to the team’s lead with another pass from Richard, this time for 10 yards. The extra point attempt was missed by Dominic Lévesque, and it was 13-0 after 15 minutes.

Richard completed a third touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The Laval pivot found Alexandre Savard in the end zone, for an 8 yard pass to give him his first CIS major.

The very next kickoff, the Rouge et Or regained the ball on a Stingers fumble. Richard himself completed the work with two consecutive races, the first for nine yards and the second for two yards which translated into another touchdown. It was already 27-0.

Maxime Boutin scored on a pass play and got a six-yard major.   Dominic Lévesque added two field goals from 25 and 12 yards before the end of the half.

At halftime, the Rouge et Or  retreated to the locker room with a 40-0 lead.

The attack continued in the second half. A Lévesque field goal (32 yards) and a single from the visitors put the score to 43-1 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Étienne Moisan added a major on a 24-yard pass from Marc-Antoine Langevin, who came in relief of Richard Hugo. The Stiners conceded a safety, but they took advantage of a few long passes to score their only touchdown of the game on a 21-yard pass from Colin Sequeira to Daniel Skube with one minute to play.

The Rouge et Or amassed 524 offensive yards as opposed to 267 for the Stingers.
